New friendships and old rivals

Mason placed Patch back on the table and walked to the door. It was silent as he walked back into the room. Neither Matthew or myself said a word to him. He just laid back against the door, chocolate bar in hand and took in heavy breaths. It's understandable why he would feel like this. One moment a man was given a new heart; the next he felt as if he was robbed of something incredible. Even SCP have challenges they can't overcome. However small those numbers of SCP are.

"I had such high hopes for this test. Such ashame it didn't work out," I sighed, looking to Mason. "Are you alright? Do you need a moment alone?"

"W-why...? Why didn't my arm get cured?" he muttered, eyes glued to his arm.

"As I mentioned before, this was only to test if bone can be replaced. Much like with a past test; this resulted in a failure," I responded calmly.

"This isn't the first failure?" Matthew asked. "What else can't SCP-2295 replace"?

"I'm not the only one?" Mason said surprised.

"Yes, this isn't the first time that a test failed. It happened long before I came to the foundation. A test had been preformed on a D-class suffering a seizure. Patch gave the same reaction as you both saw. Panick, unsure of what to do, and crying for the D-class," I laid back in my chair. "The chocolate you got is Patch's form of apologizing. We aren't sure how he makes it or how he cries. As much as we know, there is more that is still unknown."

"I'll say," the two men said.

We all stayed in the room a while longer before heading out. The gaurd returned and took Patch back to my office. I thanked them both for their time and reminded Matthew of his check-ups. He made sure to continue his thanks, as well as saying he'll keep his promise. Mason gave his thanks before walking out first. Still upset of not getting a new arm. I'm sure this will pass in due time.

I gave the warning of the likely chance it not working. Nothing happened to him. Patch could only show how sorry he was for not fixing him. Even getting some candy as a gift. Matthew even made a comment about how cold he got toward the end. Being the older of the two, he reminded him of his young child throwing a tantrum. I can't say I disagree with him; not being that much older myself. But I can't hold that against him.

I commented about how he needed to view it through his eyes. While he got a perfectly, health heart; he got nothing out of the testing. Who wouldn't be bitter about it? Just let him and go about the day normally. I did the same in my early years. It helps with your mental health to not think of others. For better or worse; especially in my line of work.

It goes without saying that testing went well. The question got put to the test, an answer was given and all findings sent to the proper representatives. I even sent a request to have Matthew be an official "supply runner" of mine. Mason did come to mind, but that's to be seen still. I'm sure Patch would like seeing another familiar face around. Change up the daily duties and routine a bit. No time to think of that, thou. Lunch time had come and I've been looking forward to it.

Once Patch was safely returned, I made my leave and locked up the room. The cafeteria really does have the best food and best part of working here. Course, with a job like this, it'd be cruel not to have a good place to eat. My stomach growled on and on till I got in line. I waved to a few familiar faces, made small talk and found a spot to sat down. Everything was going great until an unwanted visitor came to be a bother.

"Taking a break from playing with your stuffed toy?" a cocky voice called out.

"Haaa, do you really need to bother her again?" the more pleasant of the two said.

Swallowing my food, I sighed, "You really do have nothing better to do, do you Dr. Cove?"

"Awww, I can't say hello?" he snickered. "I just find it so funny that you willingly asked to be a caretaker of that bear. Couldn't take the real work of other SCP?"

"Dr. Cove please! You do realize it's not easy to get a request approved? Not just anyone gets the green light," his assistant said.

"You should listen to him more. I'm astonishing at how Dr. Ayre has lasted this long with you. Then again, who would join you afterwards," I said uninterested.

"Not like I'd expect anyone else even if that were the case. But let us not get off topic here. Dr. Ayre does have a point on the request part. How did someone like you manage that? I've put in a few, yet those never go anywhere," Dr. Cove said annoyed.

"I only followed the guidelines and filled out the proper paperwork. I had a reasonable amount of years under my belt. That is all that was done, no strings and just waiting for the signs," I said.

"Really? So you got a meeting with an 0-5 member and it all went well? Why would they get involved like that? Letters are the standard, yet I heard you were never given one," he said, trying to sound like he cracked a case.

I rolled my eyes, reached into my coat and pulled out an opened envelope. A thick, black wax seal on the back. The 0-5 logo colored in white to be shown clearly. In all honesty, my approval notice had come to me differently. This letter was my only "allowed" way of saying I had gotten in contact with them.

The look on his face quickly changed to one of disbelief. My only words to him were that I never mentioned a meeting with them. The envelope and wax stamp is all he needed to confirm anything. All I wanted was to eat and relax before going back to my work again. It isn't uncommon to get calls for medical aid on D-class. After finishing my work from before; all I ask is for some damn peace of mind. Fortunately, Dr. Ayre got the message and apologized for bothering me. Then pulling Dr. Cove away, saying to just give it up and that it clearly wasn't a fake. With gritted teeth, Cove followed behind and gave me the side eye. I just waved him off and continued eating. The things people do to just get some form of validation, I swear.
