I had known Johnny Cade my whole life. Before his parents turned into what monsters they are, our parents were best friends. He's 16. I'm 16 too but only 6 months younger.

My mother adored him. She always used to tell us stories about ourselves as children. One day though, she told Johnny about the framed photos I have on my walls. She told him how I often stare at them before bed.

Not gonna lie, I was super embarrassed. Johnny asked to see them after dinner. I of course said yes.

Johnny is such a gentleman. He helps my mother with the dishes and it made my heart melt. I knew my mother would approve of him.

After cleaning up dinner, I brought Johnny to my room and we laughed at the memories and admired the photos.

"You look so beautiful in this one Cay," Johnny said, pointing at an image

The image was me and Johnny at the 7th grade formal because we both didn't get a date.

"Awe thanks, Johnny!" I laughed " that was way more fun than going on a date!" I exclaimed.

"Yea, it was"

After that day, I realized how much I love Johnny. Not just as a friend. He was caring, gentle, and loving. I just hoped he felt the same.

Johnny's POV ... at the Curtis house

I strolled into the Curtis house for breakfast as usual and nobody seemed to be there except Dallas. The brothers must be in the kitchen and Two-bit mustn't be here because mickey is on and he never misses "mickey hour".

"Ey Johnny, sup man" dally greeted

"Hey, dal, where are the guys at? I questioned.

"I betcha Two-Bit's boozed up someplace, he snickered " Steve's got an early shift at the DX or somthin, Dar's at work." He said in a thick New York accent.

"K" I said, sitting on the couch waiting for the guys.

I was walking to go have a smoke with Pony and Dal outside because Darry has a rule where if you smoke in the house, he takes away your pack and lighter for the day.

I was about to open the door when Cay barged in.

"Mornin' ya filthy hoods!" Cay said mimicking a socy southern accent.

"H-hey Cay," I stuttered.

I never stutter. Maybe the socs jumping us had something to do with it

Or I just need a smoke.

"Hey Johnnycake!" Cay said going on her tiptoes to ruffle my hair.

I may only be 5'8 but Cay is 5'2.

I patted her back and went outside.

"What was that about?" Pony asked while we were taking.

"What was what all about?" I asked trying to dodge the question.

"C'mon Johnny, man you know what it's about."

"Well I'm spooked from the socs and all," I said.

"What about Cay?" Pony pressed.

"I-I kinda sorta like her I guess, oh damn I practically love her guys! But she'd never take me, I'm too skittish and jumpy and she's all tuff and smart and outgoing. She's got all th3 guys practically drooling over her and she could go for anyone. She'd never want me, not in a million years." I ranted.

"I'm not so sure about that Johnny,"
