"I wish you could be here," you sighed into the phone. "I miss you."

You could hear his own sigh. "I wish I was there too."

"I'm not disturbing your case, am I?" One of the hairstylists gently tilted your head to the side, pinning down a section of your hair.

"No, of course not. You could never disturb me." You swore that you could hear his smile.

You scoffed. "Don't be cheesy, it's weird."

"Miss L/N, could you face to the right?"

"Sounds like you've got a lot going on in there."

You turned your head. "Movie premiers are not taken lightly, my dear."

A brief pause. "Are you nervous?"

"Nervous? Because it's my first public appearance since the entire scandal about my brother being a literal criminal? Of course not."

The hair and makeup stylists froze, glancing at each other.

"Erm." Spencer cleared his throat. "If there are any stylists or something in here, do you guys mind stepping outside for a moment? I'm sorry."

The prep team were out of the room in a flash, leaving a half-done-up-Y/N on her own. "I'm supposed to be on the red carpet in an hour. Probably not the most convenient time for a private pep talk."

"Y/N."

You exhaled, putting the phone up to your ear. "Okay, okay."

"You worked your ass off for this movie. You are an insanely talented actress. You deserve everything, and Joshua had no role in your success."

A small stinging sensation in your eyes. "I'm wearing mascara, you can't do this to me, Reid."

"I love you."

How could three words cause such a visceral reaction in a person? Despite the Los Angeles heat, you felt a shiver. Goosebumps laced your arms. "What?"

"I am in love with you, and you are going to make the rest of the world fall for you too."

You inhaled sharply, wiping the tear running down your cheek away. "I love you."

Spencer laughed softly. "I uhm I have to go. Picture me in the crowd, okay?"

"I will."

"Bye. Love you."

"Goodbye. Love you."

It's hard to smile for the cameras when it feels like every camera is hunting for the exact moment when you falter.

"Over here! Y/N, here!"

"Y/N! Y/N!"

"Can you comment on Joshua L/N's sentencing?!"

Your cheeks hurt.

"Y/N!"

Your eyes locked with Anissa as she stood at the other end of the carpet, giving you a thumbs up. Everything was fine. Keep smiling.
