A Family Affair (Hunter Street)

Chapter Eight -- A Tough Discovery

IT WAS THE second full day of their adventure after they solved the first clue about meeting Tim and Simone, and they had gotten nowhere at all. They didn't even have the most recent clue that would lead them forward in this adventure. Jennie couldn't hide her disappointment and frustration as she lay in Max's bed, the one she took over at the Hunter's house. Jasmyn was asleep above Jennie, her soft breathing alerting Jennie that she was going to stay sleeping for a while. She felt like she needed to get up and figure things out, but she had nothing to figure out. 

She sighed, bringing her hand up and brushing her curly brown hair out of her eyes. Shifting in Max's albeit uncomfortable bed, she grabbed her phone from the small bedside table, unplugging it from her charger. She had plenty of notifications from her vlog diaries from a couple of years ago when she vlogged her daily life while on her paper route. She gave that up just before she was accepted to Miss Lucas' school. 

A bad feeling settled in her bones when she thought about Miss Lucas since she was the reason why Anika was brainwooshed, just like she wanted to brainwoosh the whole of Amsterdam. This incident only happened a few months ago, and Jennie wasn't really sure how they managed to survive. Everyone had their own role in fighting Miss Lucas and saving Amsterdam, but it was a miracle that they didn't lose their minds in the process -- well, besides Anika. 

Speaking of Anika, Jennie noticed she had a text from her that was very recent. Clicking on it, she frowned when she saw that it was only between the two of them, not on the group chat between the girls. Anika was asking Jennie if she could make a movie of sorts about this new adventure as she did with her vlogging diaries. She frowned and was confused about how Anika basically read her mind about her vlogging. She quickly answered her and said that she could if she wanted to. Three little bubbles appeared, which meant that Anika was awake right then, too. 

Jennie set her phone down on the bed beside her, and she sat up in her bed. Above her, Jasmyn let out a little snore, and Jennie stopped moving for a second, hoping she didn't wake her up. It was still pretty early, and she knew Jasmyn stayed up late last night. She wasn't sure where she went out in Amsterdam, but Jennie knew that she quietly walked through the door to their shared room last night while Jennie was trying to go to sleep. Making sure Jasmyn was still asleep, she pushed herself up into a sitting position and peeked up at the other girl. She was curled up in a ball in Sal's bed, sleeping hard.

With a small grin, Jennie stood up from the bed and took quick, quiet steps across the floor toward the door. Since she couldn't go back to sleep now, she decided to get up and try to get cracking at whatever she could do, even if it meant just making breakfast for the other girls. She didn't want to be useless and do nothing.

She stepped through the door and slowly shut it behind her, waiting until it clicked into place before she looked over at Anika's room. The door was wide open, and Anika was laying on top of her covers, dressed in a pair of wide-legged jeans and a shirt dotted with small yellow sunflowers all over the white cotton. Anika looked over at her door, and Jennie waved. 

"I was just texting you back," Anika said, laughing softly. She sat up on her bed, allowing her leg to dangle over the edge of her bed. Jennie leaned against the doorframe, crossing her arms over her chest as she quickly glanced around the purple and pink room. She noted that Evie's bed was empty, and right then, she heard a dog bark in the distance. She frowned, knowing she heard a dog bark during the night. Anika didn't seem fazed, though. "Well, now that you're here, I'd like to talk about the small movie I want you to shoot."

Jennie held up a hand, the dog slipping from her mind. "May I ask a question?" she asked, and Anika nodded. "Why do you want to make a movie about this adventure? Wouldn't that get our information out in the world, especially the world where the boys will see it?"
