Sirens are echoing the streets, voices grow louder. My eyes open at a leisurely pace, an intensely bright light, beaming into my direction. I hasten my hand to my deprived field of view, shadows slithering through my grazed hand. Car lights?
Suddenly my obscure vision begins to stabilise, the voices had faces. I am sitting in the middle of a well-trodden road, people surrounding me. Their staring is so sharp, almost claustrophobic.
A tall muscular man approaches me, his eyes are so sorrowful with a smidgen of lushness brown. His hair was short yet wavy, he leaned over offering me his hand. I lent forward, hesitantly at first, his hand enveloped mine. His hands are so soft, I let out a agonizing whimper, my other hand pressing on my throbbing side.
"Are you okay?" The stranger asked. "I, erm... I'm not sure" I replied, I had suddenly felt muddled. As if my own brain had broken into fragments, "Wait!" I shouted, I don't remember who I am...
My eyes closed with concentration and a mixture of panic, who was I? Who am I? I don't even remember my own name? What happened to me? So many questions passed rapidly through my now fragmented brain.
"Ma'am, are you okay? An ambulance is on its way" the strange man said, he sounded so reassuring yet my anxiety was too overpowering. My brain was struggling to figure out who I was, who am I? Who am I? Who am I? My brain echoed those words repeatedly.
In the torment, something had caught my gaze. A wallet was floating in a puddle where I had awoken, I wasted no time and eagerly approached the muddy puddle. The stranger was talking to the medic until I had caught his attention. He had followed me and stood idly watching what I was doing.
Finally, could this hold the clues I had been so desperately trying to find. I scavenged through the wallet and not much was found, most of the paper inside had withered away in the muddy water.
Immediately something caught my eye, my ID? Though almost completely destroyed, however confirmed by the reflection staring back at me through the muddy puddle. I can only make out my photo along with my date of birth, 20th April 2001. Im 21 years old? Well that's a start I suppose.
"What have you got there? Does that belong to you?" The same stranger asked.
I stood up, peaking over the man's shoulder, looking at the medics. "I've lost my memories, who I am, who I was. If I get pulled into hospital, I'll get nowhere to finding out who I am. I need somewhere to stay for the night, will you help me please! I know you hardly know me, but it'll just be for one night." I pleaded.
The man's eyes closed as he pressed his hands over his face, slowly sliding them down in thought.
"This is crazy" the man replied, letting out a soft laugh. He stared at me with his hands on his hips, thinking sternly.
"Just one night" he said as he walked off, I instantly followed, keeping my head down to not draw attention. We approached a grey bmw, the tall man opened the side door for me. I stood idly for a moment, I barely knew this stranger, yet what choice did I have? I got inside and sat down.
"You're doing all this for me, yet I don't even know your name" I asked, somewhat embarrassed.
"My names David, a pleasure to meet you... ma'am." He replied.
I stared out the window as houses passed, the thought in the back of mind constantly asking, could one of those houses be mine? And yet I'd never know... not yet at least.
I noticed David's eyes were gazing along at me through the rear view mirror, I've only known this man for a mere few moments and yet I feel safe In his company. Well that or I'm being kidnapped, to think he's actually going to help me, somebody he's just met. Let's just hope it's the latter.
After a few more minutes pass, we arrive at this beautiful home, the buildings paint looked fresh coated, the flowers were radiant. Practically blooming with colour, it was welcoming delightful after the nightmare I'd experienced.
David gets outta the car and opens my door for me, I had been lost in appreciation, I exit the vehicle and walk along the pathway towards David's home.
As I entered David's house, the aroma was fragrant, with a hint of lavender, it reminds me of David's aftershave. As I continue inside, I take my shoes off while admiring the interior.
"You'll be sleeping on the couch. Normally I'd offer for you to take my bed, but I honestly still don't trust you that well, I hope that's okay?" David nervously mumbled.
"Yes of course, I'm just grateful to have a roof to sleep under, the couch will be fine." I replied nervously back.
"Are you hungry? I could make you something?" David replied insistently.
"Oh no no, I'm fine thank you. Honestly. I think I'll be getting some rest soon. I have a lot to process and think about." I replied in a quiet tone.
"Alright well, blanket is here and there's food in the fridge if you're hungry later, I'll give you time to think." David walked upstairs, shutting the door behind him.
As the door shut I let out a huge sigh of relief, yet I felt my anxiety continue to grow. I sit back, contemplating how I got into this situation. I close my eyes, my thoughts yet again rushing. The last thing I remember was those blinding lights from the car, I groan loudly in anger.
Some hours pass... nothing came to mind.
"This is ridiculous, how has nothing came back to me yet!" I say to myself. I should have remembered something by now, I'm getting nowhere. I lean forward, looking at my hands. I laugh to myself, I haven't even looked at myself since the accident have I?
I get up off the coach and approach the bathroom, I close the door behind me and stare into the mirror above the sink. My blonde hair hangs down to my shoulders, my light hazel brown eyes look so fatigued, my skin still soft, that's good at least. My lips too, I guess my pink lips were always one of my favourite features.
Wait! One of my favourite features! I remembered something, a smile filled my face with joy, I will remember again, I will remember my name!
A silent knock creeps through the door followed by David's voice, "is everything okay in there?" He asked.
"Yes, I'm just washing my face, I'll be right out." I replied. I stare into the mirror, discovering this isn't much, but it's definitely a start. I turn the tap on and clean my face, cleaning the dirt and grazes along my hands.
I exit the bathroom and notice that David's nowhere to be seen, I look around until I notice a note and a plate with a mixture of fruit on it. The note reads, "Eat something please!" I laugh and let out a gentle smile. That David sure is a character. The fruit was sweet and ripe, very deliciously fresh.
After consuming it all, I laid back and closed my eyes slowly, falling into a deep sleep...
When I opened my eyes, I see a cozy white cottage that's surrounded by beautiful flowers, could this be my home? As I approach the house I hear a voice in the distance. I can't quite make it out, it's coming from the tree swing.
As I approach the tree, the voice is becoming louder and now understandable. "Help me, help me, help me"
Who was this person, they sound like a child? "Where are you?" I replied.I look around the tree and see a little girl with a boy, "Come Michal, chase me! Chase me" she laughs as she runs in circles around the tree. "I'm going to get you!" He laughs also, chasing her in circles.
Who's Michal and this little girl? Could... that be me? I thought. Suddenly the voice came back "help me help me help me", it grew louder and louder, I see flashes of an adult corpse... it looked rotted and decayed. "Help me!" The voice shouted loudly into my very soul.
I sat up, breathing heavily. I twisted my body with the covers off, I leaned forward trying to catch my breathe. Who was that man? And why was he asking me for help? My hands were shaking and I couldn't calm down. I think, I think I'm going to see if David's awake.
