someone gifted me a perfume bottle yesterday. i tried it on me today. vanilla extract and shea butter. the smell of your shampoo. suddenly i'm 16 again, in your car with your freshly-washed hair. and in between stolen glances and girl in red jamming sessions, i tell you i love the smell of your hair. a couple months later, you're in my room. my mom thinks you're just a friend. so we sneak into the bathroom to kiss. and when you go back home, i sit down on the bathroom floor, trying to take in the lingering fragrance of vanilla for as long as it lasts. then a year later you're gone and i'm on my own. until today. you're not in my life anymore. but i can still hold on to a piece of you, just with a waft of vanilla.
