AURORA MALFORD startled awake in the middle of the night, night terrors had always been a familiar and sometimes even comforting presence during nights when sleep seemed arduous. But her recent terrors were anything familiar or comforting, due to the new star of her nightmares; a certain, recently deceased, friend of Auroras.
For the past few weeks since her death, the delicate face of the ever beautiful and now forever dead Emma Finnegan haunted Auroras dreams each night. Her face frozen, not speaking any words, but screaming accusingly at Aurora nevertheless.
Aurora rose from her bed. Attempting to sleep was futile now. She glanced at the antique silver clock her grandfather had passed on to her last year hanging in her room, it read 4:43. Bored and exhausted she contemplated calling the only person she knew would pick up her call at this ungodly hour of the night.
Sighing she picked up her phone from her bedside table and clicked on Theodore Colwells contact and waited for him to pick up. And pick up he did, within exactly three rings of the phone, almost as if he was waiting for the call. "It's been three nights since your last one, I consider that as progress" his voice sounded from the device. Aurora smiled softly, "It's only been two" she corrected him. "Do you want me to come over?" He questioned, cutting to the chase, these late night calls that occasionally led to late night meetings were nothing out of the ordinary for this pair whenever either of them were distressed or lonely and tonight was no exception.
"No" the girls voice sounded, surprising the boy. Ever since the incident a few weeks prior, Aurora had rarely turned down the boys offers to come over, depending on him for comfort almost every other night. The boy didn't mind, In fact, he quite enjoyed being her sole source of comfort, even if it meant having to sneak back into his house early in the morning to get ready for school. "Miss Delaney will be up soon anyway, I just didn't want to spend the next hour alone. stay on the phone with me please" The girl explained. "Of course" Theo replied, and just as he had promised, they stayed on the call together until dawn, only occasionally talking until the housekeeper Miss Delaney woke and Aurora had to leave.
As she began getting ready for school she let her mind think back to before the incident, back when everything seemed normal and mundane. So much different from her life now, it's funny how so much can change in just a few weeks, it's funny how someone can stop existing forever in just a moment.
She got into her car that was waiting for her at the front gate of her home, Malford mansion, and wished her driver, Tom, good morning. Coming from a family of money, Aurora had never needed to drive herself anywhere she'd always had somebody to do that for her and she was glad she did because with what had happened just recently Aurora would never have been able to conjure up the strength to touch a steering wheel, much less drive herself to school every morning.
She relaxed into the black leather seats of the Porsche, the morning sun hardly noticeable through the heavily tinted windows. The car has been a gift from her dear father last year, for her 16th birthday. Of course, she'd never driven the car and nor has she ever wanted to; she had no interest in cars at all. Nevertheless she'd accepted her fathers meaningless gift with a sequel and an equally meaningless hug.
Tom signaled to Aurora that they'd arrived at her school and with a soft sigh she fixed her hair and skirt and got ready to exit the car. Already tired and dreading having to speak to the friendly imbeciles she attended school with. She nodded at Tom and with a deep breath she exited the car. Smiling friendlily at the students who were already staring at her, she walked toward the old castle like building she called her school. Le Vehemens prep was the most prestigious school in all of England, even royalty struggled to get admitted here, with a strict no scholarship policy and a bias towards alumni families, Le Vehemens was thick with tradition and was the school parents with an abundance of money were desperate to get their kids accepted into.
Le Vehemens was where Aurora Dianthe Malford and her few close friends thrived, and the large pond of this very school was also where Emma Nova Finnegan had drowned two weeks ago.
