Emerging from a small gap in the rocks to an opening with green grass and daises spread out over the ground. And I gasp in horror. The old mighty Oak was sheltered in a thick coating of black sheet like shadow. I let go of Chase hand and walk up to the tree my knee's shaking. I walk up and stopped at the base of the black blanket and reach out my hand. It past straight through, so taking a deep breath I walk through it.
I could hear Chase calling me. I didn't answer. I couldn't, my voice was stuck in my throat. I walk up and kneel down at the base of the tree and place my hands on the bark. I could feel the pals of the tree under my palms.
I look up at the branches and let out a shaky breath. "Why did you call me here? What, am I supposed to do?" I say.
Then the wood opens just close to the base. I jump back a little. A girl with moss-green skin, her dark eyes wide she swayed toward me, moving like a wind-blown branch. She kneels down in front of me.
Her dark eyes look up and into mine. "Jay-lee Cross, I have called you here because only you can help me. I have seen your dreams; I have seen things that I cannot say. I ask of you to help this shadow and put it into this." She then handed me a small white wooded locket. I could feel the pulse of energy. "This is made out of the heart of my tree. I will soon die away now. And I ask of you to draw glamor into your heart and shielded this shadow into this locket. It will help you in your life, and it will protect you if you need it."
I was confused. "How though, how do I shield a shadow?" I look at the locket.
The dryad places her hands over mine. "You have to believe you can do it in your heart. And don't let anyone else wear the locket. Or the locket will shatter." She lops the locket over my head. "Now, Jay-lee Cross close your eyes." I closed them, trusting her. "Now, focus on drawing the glamor of the shadows into the locket." I listen to her voice and focus on the locket and feel the glamor around me like a fire in my heart I feel the shadows wanting help. And then I feel something wash over me. I feel the glamor fade slowly away and then I feel the happiness in the locket.
"Jay-lee, open your eyes." The dryad speaks softly. I open my eye the suns light was surrounding the tree again. I was both filled with happiness and guilt. The tree lost the glow of life and it was now slowly dying. The dryad was looking at me, she smile.
"You, Jay-lee have passed in." I look up and then back. In shock, I jump back. The dryad now lay dead in my lap.
"Jay-lee, are you alright... shit. What happened to the dryad? Shit Jay....." Chase was moving the dead dryad and laying her down on the ground. He mumbled a few things and the roots of the Oak tree came and claimed the body of the dryad.
The wind was wiping me hair across my face and the slight smell whipped into my nose of dirt and decaying wood. It made my hair stand on edge. Chase grabbed my arms and pulled me to my feet and walked me away from the old Oak. His touch sent shivers up my spine. It wasn't that I was cold; it was because I was freaked out and I didn't know what to do. His touch both makes me feels safe, but also in danger. And I didn't know why. I can hear him saying something softly about the dryad, but I shut it out. He guides me down a new path the sight just made me even sadder than before. The trees look almost dead, and they beard scars like someone taking an axe to them. I taste salty water on my tongue, I realized I was crying.
Chase stopped. And turned to me, I hate that I feel so weak right now. He looks at me with such sad eyes. I try to turn away. But, he has a strong hold on my arms.
"Please... just leave me alone..." I try twist out of his grip. But, he loops me around and pulls me against his chest. I struggle for a moment. Then let myself sit in his embrace. I sit there for a while just thinking. I look up. I push him away. In shock, I look away, forcing myself to look again, I was scared. Chase now has ears like an elf, large blue eyes, ashy-white hair and a tail.
