I sat up and yawned, stretching my arms as I sat up. I groggily rubbed my eyes and shifted over, swinging my legs over the side of my bed. Jared groaned as he pulled me back down to bed. He nuzzled his face into my hair and wrapped his arms around my waist.
"Five more minutes." His breath tickling against my neck. I giggle and wriggle away.
"How about you stay here, and I'll make coffee." I bend down and kiss his forehead. I put on my robe and slippers and shuffle into the kitchen. I start brewing the coffee and stare out this window. A house across the street was just for sell and I guess someone had bought it. There are U-haul trucks, pulling into the driveway. I watch as a man, around my age, jumps out of the truck and moves around to the side. He makes his way to the back of it and pulls the back open. Other men come around and help him unload.
The man appeared to be incredibly handsome, tall, sandy blonde hair which was slightly curly. He had a little scruff on his face, like he hadn't shaved in a day or two. When I looked at him, I had a strong sense of deja vú. The more I stared at him, the stronger the feeling got. I was snapped out of my thoughts when a strong pair of arms grabbed me from behind.
"JARED!" I squealed, "put me down right now!" he spins me around laughing. His laugh is so contagious, I can't help but laugh when he does. His laugh is one of the billion reasons I love him so much. I thrash around and eventually he gives up, setting me back on the ground.
"New neighbors I see," He points out, pouring me a cup of coffee, "We should introduce ourselves." He hands me the mug. I bring the cup so my face and take a deep breath, smelling the coffee. It was my most favorite scent in the world.
"I was thinking I could bring him so cookies later," I sipped my coffee, the warm liquid against my throat soothed the morning achness when you first wake up, "after work of course." Jared just nodded. He grabbed his coffee and sat down at the table reading the paper. I finished my coffee and put the mug in the sink. I walked over and kissed Jared's cheek, not saying a word as I walked to my room to get ready for the day.
"Evelynn, would you be a darling and close for me?" Debbie asks, wiping her hands on her apron."Of course! We wouldn't want to keep Daniel waiting, now would we?" I ask, wiggling my eyebrows at her. Debbie was co-owner of my bakery, or I should say our. We had been best friends since Kindergarten, at least that what she says. I can't remember anything before the day I woke up in the hospital, but that's a whole different story. Debbie normally closes up the bakery, but tonight she had plans with Daniel. He is her boyfriend of two years, and he had a romantic date set up. She looks up and smiles.
"Oh shut up! Jared is just as sappy!" She laughs and throws her apron at me, landing on my face. I always tease her because Daniel is such a romantic and she isn't into all that cliché romance junk, just like me. I pull the apron off my face and stick my tongue out at her.
"Whatever you say, now go!" I shoo her out the door. She turns and waves before running to her car. I grab the plate of cookies I made today and put them in a container. I finish wiping down the counters and shutting off the lights. I grab the container and keys and walk out the back door. I finish locking up and heading down to my car.
I climb in and drive home. I'm overly excited to properly meet this mystery man especially since I feel like I've met him before. The feeling has been nagging at me all day. I finally reach my house and pull into the driveway. I hop out and grab the cookies, then make my way to this mystery mans house. I need a nickname for him, mystery man doesn't cut it. I'll call him Noah, because he reminds me of Noah from The Notebook. I mean Ryan Gosling is a pretty attractive man.
I make my way across the street and walk up the driveway. The butterflies in my stomach kept growing and growing until I reached his porch. I climbed up the rickety, wood stairs and stood in front of the door. I knocked on the door and waited. The light flickered on and the door swung open. Noah looked down at me, seeing how short I was. We made eye contact, there was a lot of emotion in his green eyes. Sadness, stress, and incredibly tired. After a long, awkward moment of staring I cleared my throat.
"Hi, I'm Evelynn and I saw you move in this morning, so I thought I could stop by and welcome you to the neighborhood" I smiled, he only nodded and stepped outside, slightly closing the door behind him. He looks at me and sticks out his hand.
"Grayson." I smiled even wider and shook his hand. I loved the name Grayson. I always have. I pulled my hand away and handed him the container of cookies. I took one last glance at him. He studied my face, and I couldn't help but notice how gorgeous his eyes were.
"I better head home, if you need anything just stop by. Goodnight Grayson" I turn and walk away as I hear him whisper something. I couldn't quite make out what he said. Before I could turn and ask him what he said, he was in his house. The light stayed on until I got onto my porch, I turn to look at his house and the light flickers off. Grayson was interesting, even though I just met him, I feel like I've known him for a long time. There was that comforting feeling around him, he was so quiet, yet I felt like the feeling of being around him was loud. I unlock my door and head to my room. Jared isn't home yet. I change and climb into bed. I eventually fall asleep, dreaming about Grayson all night long.
"Eve," I look up from my book. I see Jared standing there with the mail. "You got a letter." I get up and stroll over to him, plucking the letter from his hands. There's no return address or stamp. I sigh, thinking it must be another letter from Calum. Before I met Jared a few years back Calum was interested in me. I never had the same feelings as him, but he always sends me flowers and letters to try and convince me.
"Is it another letter from Calum?" Jared asks, peering at the letter.
"Maybe, I'm not sure yet." I say. He just pats my shoulder and continues to look through our bills. I stare at it for a while and then I walk out to the porch. I sit down on our swing and begin opening the letter. It's a piece of notebook paper. I unfold it and begin reading the neatly written cursive.
Evelynn,
Knowing you you're probably sitting outside reading this, sitting criss cross applesauce and a coffee right next to you. You must be confused, no return address and no stamp. Let's just say it's better off not knowing who I am. Or at least not knowing yet. I'm going to tell you a story of love. Not a love story, because that is the bullshit version of life. The boy gets the girl, they fight, but then makeup and live happily ever after. Well this isn't the case. This story of love is about the compassion between the two, and how they grow closer together even though it's a forbidden love. Again you must be so confused. But one day you'll understand.
L
I stare at the letter, baffled. It is completely random. I turn it over to see if there is a backside, but there isn't. I don't understand this whole "story of love" or how "L" is going to tell me it. I fold up the letter and hold it to my chest. I stand up and walk back inside. As soon as I get into my room I walk into my closet, digging through and pulling out my mother's old jewelry box. It's completely empty when I open it. I gently place the letter in the small box and close it, burying it back inside my closet.
