Blowing up pink balloons was something I never expected to be doing on a Wednesday night in my office with Niamh.

She's going above and beyond for Poppy to have a good birthday party here tomorrow, I don't quite know why but she has a loving heart and wants to do something good.

There's probably some ulterior motive that she hasn't let slip to me yet, nothing nasty but I can tell the cogs have been turning in her head since Saturday when we bumped into them at the shop.

Harry's been weirdly quiet at work since as well, ever since he started working here he's been a pain in my ass but now he's just doing his job without bugging me. I let him leave earlier for his lunch break so he could pick Poppy up on time, that got a smile out of him.

I watch Niamh throw a pink balloon onto the ground. My office looks like a unicorn has thrown up everywhere but it's making Niamh happy so I am. I made sure to cancel all my meetings tomorrow for this, it's not like I can have anyone in here when it's decorated for a three year olds birthday party.

"I think that's enough." Sitting on my desk in front of me, she slides her body off and walks to where she's been throwing the balloons. "I hope Poppy loves it."

She definitely has a little bit of an attachment to Poppy, I think it's because of how often she's comforting her at preschool. Niamh simply is a lover, she was deprived of love as a child and now she tries to give enormous amounts of love to the people around her.

It makes her the best teacher.

"She will, Evie, don't overthink this. You're going to make her day." I assure, standing from my desk chair while tying the end of a balloon off while walking towards her.

Reaching her, I spin her around so I can see her pretty face. I grin, "You're going above and beyond for her and you don't need to."

Her eyes avert from mine, a small smile on her face.

"Hey..." I gently grasp her chin so she'll look at me, "somethings playing on your mind, my love, you can tell me."

Sighing, her pretty eyes fall shut.

"S'just, other kids before their birthdays all have birthday parties, you know? They hand out invites to the class like two weeks before and then they all tell me how much fun the party was the day after but Poppy hasn't really spoken about her birthday or handed out any invites."

I nod, seeing where this is going.

"She reminds me of little me." There it is.

Her eyes meet mine again, my fingers still on her chin as she looks at me with sad eyes. "I never had a birthday party where I felt loved and cared about and I want her to have a party where she is just happy."

"She will," I nod. "I'll pick the cake up in the morning and make sure everything is perfect before she gets here." I promise her, seeing a smile slowly creep onto her face.
