Kai is softly pulled from his slumber by gentle hands on his chest. Mikhail stood above him, bag ready and hair combed back and stubble cleanly shaven, shaking him from his dreams.
He looked polished. It reminded Kai of those old portraits people would keep in their lockets of sullen, smartly dressed men or women with missing smiles. It shocked him how handsome he looked, even now, even without modern influence and dressed in 100 year old robes. He'd give Ryan Reynolds a run for his money, Kai thought.
"You look nice," Kai grumbled out, still sleepy.
Mikhail fidgeted on his feet, cheeks flaring a shade of red Kai had never seen before and the vampire started to fuss over himself once more. He seemed nervous which freaked the young witch out more. He had seen him pissed off and starving, and he had also seen him stoic and silent, but nervous was a new thing - a bad thing in Kai's mind as nervousness might mean that Mikhail is going back on his promise.
Mikhail brushed his hands over his clothes, a light feather touch as to not wrinkle them.
"You think so?" He asked.
Kai felt weird for having being asked for an honest opinion. Usually this was asked back in his own home after he helped put the kids to bed, with Josette's supervision of course, because god forbid he be left alone with his siblings in case he tried to siphon from them, and Josie would ask constant questions about her outfits for dates and Kai would give nothing but snide remarks.
He's sure if he's honest now it won't come across that way. Because he does look good, in fact Mikhail looked like a groom getting ready for his big day. But he's sure Mikhail wouldn't appreciate that comparison.
"Ya nervnichayu." Mikhail muttered to himself as he flurried back to the kitchen to grab a few more things. Kai was sure it was Russian.
"Why are you so jittery," Kai called out, finally getting up and getting his own things ready. "We don't even know where the ascendant is yet. Hell, I haven't even had a chance to grab a map or figure out our plan on getting to wherever the fuck this thing is!"
Mikhail walked back into the living room, grabbing Kai's flailing arms and firmly putting them down by his sides. He took a deep breath in, and like before, Kai easily followed suit and took a breath of his own. The vampire squeezed his hands with his own, warm and slender fingers that gripped a bit too hard to be human strength that rippled through his body. A comforting gesture he hadn't had in a long time.
It doesn't last. Mikhail pulled his hands away and with them Kai's anxiety and worry. It was such an awful new feeling to have, the pounding of ones heart mixed with a clogged throat and clammy hands and one million minuscule thoughts facing through ones head. He didn't know how people dealt with it on a daily basis.
