The war raged on outside still. Robo-Leo and Robo-Raph had been finished, but those were the biggest projects Donnie had been able to handle. He was bed bound, barely able to move with his severe burn scars.
He tried his best to be useful with smaller projects, building small things to help his team. He provided things like grenades, weapons, and occasionally first aid when really needed.
He wished he could help himself, but alas. His brothers were more important, and after what he'd done, he didn't deserve the help he needed. He was alive, that was enough for them all for now.
Mikey was a stronger warrior than ever, able to make portals, like Leo used to be able to. Though it took him a lot of strength, he could do it when needed. Mikey and April's mystic powers along with D's tech helped a lot in battle, but Donnie felt useless anyway. Injured and unable to help in battle.
If one of them died, it may be on him for not having the ability to help, or at least he thought so. Even so, they were alive and doing alright, so that was good enough for him. At least they were okay.
Mikey walked into Don's lab, where he had a workspace built around his bed so he didn't have to move to create projects for his brothers. "What's up, Micheal? Anything wrong?"
"No, just.." Mikey leaned on the doorway, staring at the ground. "Thinking, I guess. I missed you a lot. I wish things were back to normal. I want to be 13 again, you know? Before the war started."
Don smiled, hiding his sorrow. "Change is okay sometimes, Micheal. This was all inevitable. At least we're still alive, right?"
"I guess," Mikey looked up at Donnie, tears welling in his eyes. "I just miss when it was all normal. I miss dad." He walked over, sitting on Donnie's bed. he knew he'd start crying soon, so may as well prepare.
"I do too, buddy. I'm sure he's okay. I'm sure he's looking for us as much as we're looking for him. It'll be alright, little bro." Donnie's shaky hand raised to pet Mikey on the head. "It'll all be okay. I'm here, always."
Tears spilled out of Mikey's eyes as he hugged Donnie close. He couldn't handle change very well, especially not with the constant reminder of the past always around him. "I miss Leo," he wailed. "I miss Raph and I miss dad and I miss when you weren't hurt and I miss New York."
"Shh, I know Mikey.." Donnie cuddled his younger brother who was crying into his chest. "I know. I do too. Do you think I enjoy being stuck in bed all day?" Don laughed. "I wish i was strong enough to help you fight the Kraang. I'm part of the reason they're after us anyways, more so now."
Michaelangelo clutched on tighter to Donnie. "It's not your fault, D. The Kraang portal wasn't Leo's fault, and the Kraang situation was not your fault."
"Thanks, Micheal. You feeling any better?" Donnie sat up slightly, looking down at the small orange-ish turtle in his lap.
"Yeah, thanks, Don."
"Always here for ya, buddy. Let me know if you need anything. That doesn't require me getting up, of course." Donnie smiled, watching Mikey get up from his spot on the bed.
"Got it! Talk to you later, D! I'm going on patrol!"
Donnie's vision faded slightly. "Alright, Cya!"
His world got darker as he watched Mikey leave. Patrol. What if he gets hurt? What if..
And it came back again.
Damnit, D, not now.
Everything went black as it felt his whole body and mind went back in time. In reality he was zoned out, but everything in front of him felt so real. He couldn't control what was going on, it felt like a sleep paralysis style re-enactment of what happened to Raph.
He couldn't control anything. He had to re-hear it all. re-see it all.
'It's all my fault, isn't it?' he thought to himself. 'The Kraang are after us, Leo is dead, Raph is gone, and I'm bed-bound. I'm useless. This is all my fault.' He was sobbing into his legs before Alopex walked in.
His world brightened again as he wiped his tears, trying to act like nothing happened. "Alo! What's up?" He gave her an unconvincing smile.
"I was gonna ask the same. Is it another flashback, D? Do you need anything?" Alopex crossed her arms, leaning in the doorway.
"Nope! Nothing's going on, what do you mean?" He giggled awkwardly, hoping it would convince her.
"Don. I know when you're lying. Everyone does, you suck at it. What's going on, bud?" She walked over to him, leaning on one of the work desks beside his bed.
He sighed, giving in. "Raph flashback. I feel like everything that has led us here is my fault. And even when I'm back, I'm no help. All I can do is make small inventions and that doesn't help them as much as I'd like. I just want to be more useful. You have mystic powers now, even you do more for them than I do." He laid his head down on his knees, sighing.
"Don, you're a lot of things. But you are NOT useless. Our team wouldn't be alive without you. We need you. Shelldon needs you. April needs you. You have a purpose and a use here, and even if you didn't, you're one of us. Never forget that," Alopex patted him on the head before getting up and walking out.
"Thanks, Allie. I'll see you later."
"When we reunite again," Pex joked.
