Chapter 4: The song of mo(u)rning
The sun rose and fell over the horizon, grazing gently over white sheets and drawing highlights onto the peaceful expressions of their mates in their sleep, as days passed too quickly to even go noticed and yet too slow as they waited... and waited... and waited.
If it hadn't been for Tadashi they would have sent them home already with the promise to call immediately once something changed. However, Yamaguchi was still trapped tightly held by the post-drop coma he found himself in. There was no say as to when he would wake up and as for now their strategy was to wait for that one moment and before he could remember what happened and drop again one of his mates had to intervene.
They stayed by his sides in shifts. One was always right there while the other was with Shoyo, ate something, went home to freshen up and bring new clothes or make some calls. Friends, family, and work. The circle of people who knew was small.
They had to tell their teams, Yamaguchi's boss, Hinata's coach, and of course their families. Hinata's was called first under the assumption it might have been too late for even a final goodbye. His mother and sister, young sweet Natsu who had just entered high school, rushed over. They looked as distraught as Tsukishima felt and mere minutes later, Hinata was still in the OP, the young girl cried first in her mom's lap before moving on to Kageyama and Tsukishima in what he assumed was meant to be a reassuring gesture but fell flat under her own distress.
She had visited often ever since and was other than her mom not caught up at work only school. Every time she brought a small bouquet of flowers, exchanged the old for new, and left some in Tadashi's room as well. The nurses loved her and just like her brother, she had this unexplainable ability to lighten up a room even in her grief.
The flowers followed cards. A tone of those written by her and her mother and even some of her classmates. They never accompanied her here probably by her own wish but they gave her gifts to leave on her brother's nightstand, sweets, cards, and other little thoughtful presents wishing him a swift recovery.Whenever his mother visited she borough food for the nursing staff and them. Tsukishima barely noticed at first but she started to take care of him and Kageyama as though they were her sons as well. In a way they were. She had always been accepting, with only a short period of getting used to the four of them bonding. Still, her genuine care caught him off guard.
She held him as he cried that night grieving the time that's been lost, Hinata's condition... What if he wouldn't be able to play volleyball again once he woke up? It'd break him.
His own mother and Akiteru of course knew as well. He didn't bother to try and reach his father. They never got along well and it got significantly worse after he declared himself in a relationship with three other men so he gave up on that part, avoided accepting the invitation to family events from his side of the family, and if he had to go he'd either proudly show off his boyfriends and talk to the one grandma and cousin who weren't homophobic or he'd gush over them constantly watching with a smirk how uncomfortable it made them.
Either way, he was glad not to have to face him when he was as vulnerable as now. Tsukishima was fairly certain that it would end with a fist in his father's face.
His mother however was her usual supportive self but... busy as always. Similar thing with Akiteru though just like Natsu he made sure to find the time if not as frequently then with a lot of sweets to make up for it. They helped them greatly.
Kageyama's parents were... a miss. He didn't expect any differently. They were always somewhat distant toward their son unsure how to handle Kageyama's "special needs". Really, they were just too lazy to learn and find the right sources. One meeting had been enough to understand why Kageyama put such pressure on himself, why he craved to stay on the court so doggedly, desperately — wasn't it the only place where he could connect with people while not being misunderstood, the only genuine form of human connection and communication he knew for a long time — he took one look and them and immediately decided he didn't like them.
