I sit carefully on the soft armchair looking out at the grounds. I know I'm playing a risky game by reading the book in the library, but it's my favorite place to read. It's so quiet and nothing beats this view. But I also know that I have a terrible habit of losing track of time. I lean back, cross my legs, and open the book I'd pulled out of the muggle section. It was the book, Romeo and Juliet, which had been recommended to me by Hermione.

Sure enough, I found myself lost in the pages of the heart wrenching love story. It was only a light tap on the shoulder that had broken me from my enthrallment. I jumped slightly, lifting my head to come face to face with none other than Hermione herself. She smiled at me sheepishly. "Sorry, Y/N. But we've got fifteen minutes until curfew and I noticed you hadn't checked the time in a while." I gave her a toothy grin of gratitude and quickly picked up my stuff. "Thanks, Hermione."

We walked out of the library together, both of us clearly nervous. I clear my throat after a minute, unsure what to say. "So, I don't know if you'd be able to help, but I'm absolutely flunking potions. I would appreciate some help if you've got some free time?" Hermione turns to me, her brown eyes practically sparkling. "Oh my gosh, of course! We could meet in Library during the free period." I nod, grinning gratefully. "That would be perfect. I'd ask Professor Snape for extra lessons, but frankly he scares me." Hermione giggles as I shiver dramatically.

We come up to the hall where we have to separate for our respective common rooms and both of us stop, avoiding eye contact anxiously. "Do you want-" "I was wondering-" Both of us go to speak at the same time and freeze when we hear the other, faces going red. I start laughing and Hermione does too. Her laugh is perfect. It is contagious. I take a deep breath and turn to her. "Look, I know that we don't know each other that well, but I really like you, Hermione. I... well, I wanted to know if you wanted to go to the Yule Ball with me?" I say the last part rather quickly and try to hide my embarrassment, turning my eyes to the floor.

Hermione is quiet for a moment and for a second, I fear I may have ruined our friendship before it really even started. Suddenly, I feel her arms wrap around my neck, her face pressed against my shoulder. I wrap my arms around her waist, pressing my cheek against her surprisingly soft curls. "Yes. Yesyesyesyes." She mutters against my robes. I give her a tight squeeze and she pulls away. Her face is just as red as mine feels. "I was really hoping you'd ask me." She beams at me. "It took me a while to work up the courage honestly." She glances down at her watch and her eyes go wide. "Oh no, I'm sorry. I don't mean to run away, but it's three minutes to curfew." I wave as she dashes away. I make it to my own common room with thirty seconds to spare, grinning the entire way to my dorm.
