Thou Shalt Not Suffer A Witch To Live.
Exodus 22:18My life has been a series of highs and the lowest of lows. From losing my family to gaining a new one only to turn around and hurt that same family. I had to distance myself for the good of the team, they had enough trouble, and I didn't want to add to that burden.
So I left to protect them from myself, at least that's what I've been telling myself...
After sneaking out of the mountain I had no idea what my next move was. It had been so long since I had to fend for myself ever since losing my family in sokovia I've always been a part of something.
First, just another orphan who lost their parents due to war. Second, a lab experiment at Cadmus. Then, a member of a team of young superheroes. And now I'm truly on my own just like before.
It didn't take long for me to reach Happy Harbor. The walk was a relatively short one so the moon was still bright. As I walked the quiet streets of the harbor something caught my eye. Near one of the boathouses, a light was on in the garage.
Normally I would've passed it off as someone doing some late-night fishing and getting their boat prepared but something was off. The hairs on the back of my neck were raised and something was telling me to go toward it.
As I walked closer to the boathouse I noticed a shadow coming out of the doorway. The shadow didn't look human and the closer I got the less it sounded human.
Once I approached the opening of the garage I peeked inside only to find a middle-aged man standing in the center of the room. While looking at the man I glanced down at his shadow to see the inhuman shadow from before.
Suddenly the man turned his head around looking dead at me. Once we made eye contact the man let out a hissing noise as his whole body contorted to face me.
With superhuman speed, the middle-aged man tried to swipe at my head. Using the training I learned from Canary, I managed to dodge the incoming strike. "My turn," and with a precise hex bolt I blasted the man sending him flying threw the wall.
As the dust settled Maxi kept his eye on the incapacitated man as he cautiously walked out of the building. Just as he turned his back to leave he heard the sound of the man getting back up.
"You just don't know when to quit do you?" Maxi said as he got ready to continue the fight. As the man got back on his feet he suddenly burst into bright green flames, as the flames grew brighter Maxi could barely make out what was going on.
As the man twisted in agony something began to emerge from his body. Maxi watched in horror as a demon-like creature exited the man's body leaving the man unconscious but seemingly unharmed.
Before Maxi had a chance to grasp the situation the demon leaped at him with the same speed as before baring its talons ready to slash him to pieces. Using his quick reflexes Maxi managed to use his power to manipulate the probability of him getting hit.
Thanks to his hex the creature completely missed Maxi entirely as if he wasn't standing there. Using another hex bolt Maxi gained some distance between himself and the demon. As Maxi thought of his next move a faint voice echoed in his head "Repeat after me, child"
"Who are you?!" Maxi responded keeping his eyes on the monster in front of him. "We don't have time, you'll have to trust me" the voice responded. Not having much of a choice Maxi did what he was asked.
"Here creature! I evoke the power of exalted Morrigan and I order you to return to the hell you came from!" after Maxi said that he focused his power on a single hex.
With the combined power of the incantation and Maxi's hex power, the demon didn't stand a chance and was exorcised leaving behind a pile of ashes. "What the hell was that," Maxi asked himself brushing his hair out of his face.
"That was a Sonneillon" a familiar voice spoke from behind him. Turning around Maxi was face to face with an elderly woman wearing a purple cloak. "Who are you?" Maxi asked already back on high alert.
"The name is Agatha Harkness it's a pleasure to finally meet you dear" after she introduced herself Maxi felt a little safer and let the woman continue. "I sensed your pain and thought I'd lend a hand" as the woman spoke Maxi felt something brush against his leg.
Looking down Maxi found a black cat brushing against him and purring in contempt. "You'll have to excuse Ebony, she has a thing for witches," Agatha said before Ebony jumped into her arms where Agatha began to pet her.
"Witches?" Maxi asked watching the old lady and her cat. "There is still much you need to learn my dear, I know of a desire in you a desire to be more than you've been. A desire to reclaim the name that's been haunting you for some time now"
As Agatha continued the clouds blocking the moon began to move. Now basked in moonlight, Ebony's shined brighter than before. "Miss Harkness, how can I be sure I can trust you?" Maxi asked still not trusting the old lady.
"I flatter myself that I possess some small expertise regarding witchcraft, and I assure you I can help you understand your powers." After Agatha was done talking Ebony meowed in agreement.
After a few minutes of thinking it over Maxi reluctantly accepted the help of the strange woman. "Now then allow me to take you to where you will be staying," Agatha said as she took Maxi to a black car that wasn't there before.
After Maxi entered the passenger side of the car Agatha began the long drive to her house. As the car drove out of Happy Harbor Maxi looked back in the direction of Mount Justice one last time. Closing one chapter of his life...and opening the next.
To be continued...
