I have friends. They're not nice, that's for sure, but, yes, I do have friends. I've got an ass of a best friend, Brandon, and an even bigger ass of a girlfriend, Sammi. They aren't nice. I can tell you that for sure.
"Yo! Look who it is!" Brandon yells out. He turns to look at me, a smirk spreading across his face. I just sigh and look away as he turns his head back to his next victim, who happens to be Harley.
Harley is... well, she's something else. When I moved here from Australia, she was the first person who I saw at my new school, the school that I'm still attending now, three years later. She's short, about five foot, but has a big personality. I've also noticed that she's the only one who really takes school seriously, except for me, of course. Harley's also got this amazing hair, though it always covers one of her eyes, which I usually don't find attractive, but it suits her well. And her eyes! They're absolutely stunning, but also the main reason why everyone bullies her. One of them is a beautiful emerald color, the other bright sapphire. Let's just say they're unique.
Harley turns her head towards us and rolls her visible eye, the green one, then proceeds to tuning her guitar on the park bench. Right now we're all at the town park, where we go almost every Saturday afternoon, and guess who's at our usual spot on the best bench near the fountain? You guessed it.
Sammi walks towards her with a strut in her step, swaying her hips as though she were the next America's Next Top Model. She puts her hands on her knees and sticks her face into Harley's. I inwardly groan.
"Say something," Sammi says snarkily and proceeds to kicking her shin. Sammi smiles super sweetly and I wonder again how I ever found her attractive. "I'm so sorry!" She shouts with fake sincerity. That's it.
"Sam..." I whine unintentionally, stepping in front of her and holding my arm up to block her from Harley. I look down to her. "What did she ever do to you?" I whisper in my heavy Australian accent that I hate. Sammi gives me a pouting look and puts a hand to the side of my face. I shake it off.
"Baby..." Sammi croons. "She's existing, first off, and she's also sitting in our spot!" She hisses at me, her voice growing louder with every word. I hear Harley sigh behind me and, out of the corner of my eye, see her look out to the lake across from the park longingly. Brandon suddenly pushes past me angrily.
"What are you doing, anyway? Screeching? You sound like a cat." Brandon says snarkily, referring to her singing and guitar playing. I look down to see a beanie filled with dollar bills. Sammi pushes past me as well, leaving me out of the group. Not that I wanted to be a part of it, anyway.
"Or maybe she's pretending to be a cat drowning," Sammi says, laughing shrilly. Harley turns back to the two of them, catching my eyes for a brief second before looking down to the grey beanie filled with money.
"I-I'm trying to, uh," she begins with a shaky voice. At that moment, I wish I could stand up for her, but that's forbidden. She sits up a bit taller. "I'm trying to earn money 'cause rent is coming up and... yeah," she finishes lamely. A sick feeling creeps it's way into my stomach. Harley has to pay her own rent?
Brandon bends down and snatches up the beanie, and Harley doesn't even protest. I notice weakly the number of rubber bracelets resting on her wrist, seeing faint scars underneath. Brandon takes the money out and silently counts it, eyes widening. "Holy shit! There's forty bucks in here!" He cries out incredulously. Sammi takes the money from Brandon and stares at it.
"What are you going to buy with forty dollars, bitch?" Sammi screeches, eyeing Harley evilly. She then turns her head to me, giving me a look like, 'Aren't you going to say anything?' I look down to my feet wearily, not wanting to be a part of this.
"I-I already told you, uh, bitch," Harley says, surprising us all by cursing. It comes out as more of a question than a remark, but, hey, at least she's standing up for herself. "I'm trying to earn cash..." Harley says somewhat angrily, standing up and crossing her arms. Sammi laughs evilly and takes this moment to shove Harley into the nearby fountain, causing a big splash and a loud squeak from Harley. I look up at that moment and see the most saddening look on Harley's face. Brandon sticks the money in his pocket.
"Let's ditch this place, yo. Don't want the fuzz coming, eh?" He says, laughing. He starts to walk away from the scene, Sammi at his heels. I stay behind, debating on whether or not to help Harley. "Come on, Cade! We have plans, remember?" Brandon shouts, deciding for me.
But walking away was the hardest decision I ever had to make.
