It's been years since I thought about what happened between Ricky and I. All it took was some alcohol and just a couple of days to bring back the past.Except this time, it was my fault.
After the locker room breakdown, I tried to stay under the radar. I couldn't risk seeing Ricky, or the possibility of listening to people talk about us. I ran home after school, and avoided everyone. Everyone left me alone, except my cousin. Jenna was currently sitting in my room. It's 2 am on a early Saturday morning. She's been trying to convince me to go to Ricky's party tonight. I've been ignoring her since she barged into my room.
"Angel... Come on!" Jenna whispers.
I stay silent.
"Angel!"
I roll my eyes, "I can't. Everyone already thinks I'm one of Ricky's sluts."
"No one thinks that! I told you it's only a rumor. Remember when Dylan made the same rumor about me?"
Yeah I remembered. Dylan Reo ended up with a black eye and a hurt ego. Jenna used that same rumor and told everyone about his small "size". Only Jenna could twist an ugly rumor about her, and make the other person look bad.
"So I should tell everyone Ricky has a small... Package?" I ask her. She laughs and stars throwing random clothes at me.
"Come on, you have to face him or else people will talk more. They always prey on the weak... Plus you didn't even sleep with him!"
Oh, but I did. Long ago...
"Angel you didn't sleep with him, did you?" Jenna's eyes start to widen, as she begins to see right through me.
"Not this time." I tell her.
"What do you mean?! There was another time?"
"Look I'll go to the stupid party. I just don't want to talk about the past." I start charging into a grey dress that Jenna had thrown at me. Jenna stays silent as we walk outside. Jake was waiting for us the whole time. He senses the awkward tension as we enter the car.
"What happened?", Jake looks at both of us.
Jenna looks at me differently, like she's trying to figure who I am.
"You guys woke me up at 2 in the morning, what do you think happened?" I snap off on him.
Instead of taking me seriously, he laughs and shakes his head.
I start to look out the window, and my mind wanders back to him again.
It was my freshman year, and Ricky's parents had just passed away. Matty and Ricky's older brother Alex was in the kitchen trying to cook, while Matty was helping. Typical Alex remained relaxed. He looks exactly like Ricky, but with brown eyes like his dad's. He made some jokes here and there. Matty was quiet, but he smiled a little from time to time. Ricky didn't react at all. He remained numb, no smile or tears. We felt as if he was blaming himself. His parents were coming to his first game as captain of the football team, when they swerved into the woods. Killing both of them instantly.
In his eyes, he was guilty for it.
That day while his brothers were in the kitchen, he kissed me slowly as if he was scared I would vanish. I thought I finally got him to like me. I was selfish. He was lost, and all I could think about was my stupid little crush on him. That same night, he showed up on my balcony. I let my guard down, and kept thinking he was finally choosing me. That day Ricky touched a part of me that I let nobody else touch. He claimed my heart and took it. Then disappeared from my life with it.
"Guys... this is getting creepy. You guys never stop talking, and now both of you are quiet as hell.", Jake interrupts my thoughts, while Jenna smacks him. That's when I notice that the car has stopped. I get out and press my sandals against the sand. Matty and Ricky's house is the only house in Bellside beach, that I know of anyway. Jenna and Jake walk ahead, holding hands. I smile, knowing that Jenna has finally decided to take a chance with him. She turns around and gives me a look that means, "we are going to talk about it later". I laugh and give her the middle finger, while she sticks out her tongue at me. Behind the house, everyone is by the bonfire. I decide to let both Jake and Jenna go ahead without me. I go inside the house and grab a beer. Then decide to grab another one, just incase. I start heading towards the stairs. I remember Mrs. Romero used to love her little flower room. It was filled with fancy stuff and shades of pink. I'm not even sure the boys come inside this part of the house anymore. I open the door and go through the room towards the balcony. I sit on the cold floor and watch everyone outside. I drink my beer, and relax for a bit. I start thinking about the past again. After Ricky showed up in my house, he drove me here. We did it in the beach, a couple miles away from his house. I was stupid to think it was special. It was disgusting and I hate that my first time was in his old Honda Civic. But what did I expect? Ricky was vulnerable at the time. He would've slept with anyone that said yes...
I look down and catch Matty sitting by the bonfire. He was laughing about something. His eyes light up more and more, as he stared at the fire. For a second, he's perfect... Then Lauren slithers in next to him, destroying my whole view. Matty puts his arm around her waist, and they kiss.
For a split second, I envy her.
Just for a second.
I didn't know if I felt hurt that he didn't tell me anything about getting back together with her or jealous that she had his attention now... Either way, it wasn't safe to think that way.
"You know the party is downstairs right?", a voice behind me speaks. I didn't have to turn around, Ricky was only one who could say only one word and make my heart beat faster. He starts sitting next to me as I move further down away from him.
"I don't bite, Angel." He says slowly.
I laugh, "You've been with half the girls in our school. I don't know what kind of things you could've caught on your little adventures with them."
"Being bitter doesn't suit you."
"Being a man-whore doesn't suit you either."
We look at each other, for what felt like years. He looks nothing like the boy I used to love. His hair was cut shorter, his green eyes were dim, and his lips have been kissed by many girls. I look away towards the bonfire, I catch Matty looking at me. He had his arm around Lauren's waist, like he always did with me. He sees Ricky next to me, and quickly let's go of Lauren. Here comes Matty "my hero" to save me. Except I didn't need it this time.
"You wanna get out of here?", Ricky asks.
"Only if you promise to leave your ego behind." I respond.
"I promise." He laughs and helps me get up from the cold floor. He grabs my arm, as he puts me on his back and he starts running.
"Wow, why are you in a hurry?", I ask.
"Matty gave me strict instructions to stay away from you. So here I am kidnapping you."
I laugh as we got on his bike, and Matty comes in running behind us. I could hear him calling out our names, as we disappeared back into our past.
