for some strange reason i wanted to go to the boys karate showcase. i didn't know what to expect, and i really didn't know the formality of this event. but i was gonna show up anyway.
it was about an hour before their little event, and i figured id freshen up a little bit. the clothes i wore to school had almost become outdated, like i had to wear something new. i settled for a pink button up, and some jeans. a white belt, and some reeboks is what i went with. i sprayed another layer of hairspray, just to make sure it keeps its volume. i really didn't need to do much makeup wise, besides apply some lip-gloss. and i'd do that before i got there. i ended up leaving the house a little early, just so i could go get a drink or something before i arrived.
i ended up just stopping by a nearby shop, grabbing a gatorade for myself, and an extra one for tommy. i figured he'd need something to drink, he's always dehydrated. but the time finally came where i was supposed to go to the dojo. it was only a walk around the block from where i parked my car, and i didn't mind it.
by the time i stepped inside the dojo, there was quite the variety of people sitting, and watching as the large group of boys seemed to be warming up. i really couldn't tell the difference between them all, they all wore the same white gi, with a cobra on the back. i found an open seat in the back, since all the ones toward the front seemed to be full. it looked like parents and grandparents who wanted to watch their kid kick other people around so badly. so, i was fine sitting in the back, plus i wasn't quite sure if i wanted johnny to know i was there.
the first thirty minutes was just some slow sparring from what looked like it was newcomers. they didn't seem like they knew very much, and the matches were super choppy and slow paced. johnny and dutch stood at opposite corners from one another, flags in hand. i made the connection in my head, that every time one of them rose a flag it indicated who got a point. and after awhile, people started to shift around, and finally one of the boys had begun sparring. jimmy was against a slimmer boy, he had the same build as that larusso kid. not super muscular, and looked like he really couldn't kick his leg high. but, the kid was fast, and ill give it to him. he actually landed a hit on jimmy, but he didn't end up winning after all.
i watched as everyone had their matches, clapping occasionally, but not too loud. i didn't want to bring any attention to myself, i sat in the back for that very reason. even when tommy was fighting, my eyes couldn't help but wander over to johnny. my gaze trying to focus enough to tell when he looked my way or not. he never did, the blonde looked like he was in his element. he was so serious, and i could tell he didn't want to stop paying attention.
johnny and bobby fought against each other, and it was a good match. they had to go into overtime, and it was pretty impressive. if my eyes weren't so hooked on johnny lawrence, i probably would've saw tommy waving over at me like a cartoon character. i did eventually notice him though, after everything was over. all the adults had swarmed over to their kids, and i caught a glimpse of my uncles face. i could tell he wasn't happy about everyone's shoes all over his mat. tommy had made his way over to me, a few of the boys following behind him. i handed him his gatorade and congratulated him.
"you're a hot mess, tommy. but you're pretty entertaining to watch." i let out, as the boy eagerly started sipping from his drink. how did i know he didn't have anything?
it was about that time, that johnny lawrence had strut over in my direction. he'd ditched the top of his gi, and had a towel hooked around his neck. i tried my hardest not to stare at him, but it was hard, i mean this was really the first time i've noticed how hot he really was. before i knew it the tall blonde is taking my gatorade from my hands and taking a swig before handing it back to me.
"i'm surprised you came." his words were calm, and confident.
"i'm surprised you wanted me here." i replied, glancing over behind johnny to see the boys tussling on the mat. i could guess the friendly fight was instigated by tommy or dutch, maybe even both. i noticed bobby was trying to play peacemaker, but also maybe referee? but i ended up turning my attention back to johnny. "why did you want me here?"
"i thought id be nice." he responded, though he didn't sound as confident in his answer as he did earlier. 'johnny, you don't even like me." i let out, a brow raising in slight confusion. there's an awkward pause between us. johnny was good at intimating me, and he was also really good at keeping eye contact. i don't know how he does it.
"i don't? did i ever tell you that?" the words rolled off his tongue, confidence beaming again. i was having such a hard time reading this boy. and just as i was about to respond, my uncle had called me over. and honestly, i'm glad, cause i'm not exactly sure what i was going to say anyway.
"y/n! what a surprise seeing you here." the older man had said, arm wrapping around me in a tight hug. he's letting go of me, before crossing his arms. "those are quite the friends you've got." he added, and i couldn't help but let out a small laugh.
"only some of them are." cause again i couldn't gauge what johnny and i were. especially not now.
