"I umm... I-I'll go do my homework." I murmured and started climbing the stairs quickly.

Gwendolyn's POV.
Leasley said our house is like a palace, because it has lots of huge rooms and paintings on the walls. "You're so lucky you live here!" Leasley always said. I thought that Leasley was the lucky one. She lived in a place with her mother, her father and her dog, Berty at a neighborhood in North Kensington. There weren't any secrets, or annoying relatives.
We used to live in a house like this, with my siblings, mom and dad in north England. Then my dad died. My sister was barely 1 year old when we moved in London, probably because mom was feeling lonely. Or she couldn't afford the house.
Mom had grew up in this place, with her two siblings, Glenda and Harry (not styles :p). Uncle Harry was the only one who didn't live in London. He lived with his wife in America.
At first I considered the place a palace too, just like Leasley. But when you have to share a palace with a huge family, it doesn't feel this big. Mostly because there was a bunch of unneeded rooms, like the dance room.
The dance room was the best place to skate, but we weren't allowed to. It's was really beautiful, with big windows and chandeliers.
The only reason the dance room was used is for Charlotte's dance classes.
In the first floor there was the music room, grandma's and aunt Maddie's bedrooms, a big bathroom and a dinning room, where the whole family had to eat together dinner at 7:30 p.m
In the second floor there was Mr. Bernard's bedroom, my grandfather's office (he was Lukas Mondrowes, he has died) and a huge library. In the second floor there was also Charlotte's and aunt Glenda's bedrooms.
Aunt Glenda had broken up with Charlotte's father, which makes Mr. Bernhard the only man in the house, unless you count as a man my brother, Nick. We didn't have pets either, cause my grandma hated animals and aunt Glenda was allergic to fur.
My mother, siblings and I lived in the third floor. Each of us had his own room and we had a big bathroom, which Charlotte was jealous of, cause in the second floor the bathroom has no windows, when our has two. I liked the third floor for one main reason, because me, Nick, Caroline and mom were alone up there.
The only drawback was that our floor was really far from the kitchen. And I'm hungry... I should have gotten an apple from the kitchen!!! Now I had to eat the cookies from the emergency self, because I was scared I would get dizzy again.
After I ate I lied on the couch. It was still 2 p.m. I had to wait two and a half hours until i could call Leasley to talk about my problems, cause she was still at school. My siblings wouldn't be back from school until 4 pm and mom comes back from work at 5. Normally I enjoy being alone in the house. I could shower without having someone banging on the door. I could listen to music as loud as I want and I could sing out loud without annoying anyone, and I could watch television without anyone telling me to change the channel because 'spongebob is starting in two minutes'.
But today I didn't want to do anything of these, so I got up and started walking around trying to think anything but the dizziness I felt minutes ago. I decided to go on the roof to clear my mind. There were stairs leading at a balcony-like spot on the roof. It was my favorite place, but it was dangerous cause the only thing between the balcony and a 20 feet fall was a small fence that barely reached my knee. Mom had hidden the key of the door that leads to the stairs inside a box with jewelry. I always make sure to put it exactly were it was cause if she realizes I know where the key is, she will hide it somewhere else.
After about 10 minutes I got bored and decided to go downstairs to check on Charlotte. When I walked in the music room aunt Maddie was sitting next to the window while Charlotte was sitting on the couch across the room. Charlotte was no longer wearing her school uniform, but a dark blue dress which ended just above the knee, which I must say was hideous.
"I'm still here as you can see" she said.
"Emma... Good." I said, trying to cover my disgust in the view of the dress.
Aunt Glenda was pacing around the room anxiously. She also was tall and very skinny and had red wavy hair and blue eyes, just like Charlotte, my mom, my grand mom, Nick and Caroline. I was the only one in the family that had straight black hair, like my father.
I always wanted red hair too, but Leasley said that my black hair looked great with my light blue eyes and my skin. She also said that the scar I had on my temple which looked like a crescent ( aunt Glenda and Charlotte said it looked like a funny banana) was actually mysterious and made me 'even more attractive'. I actually thought I was quite good looking. Of course I was nothing like 'the incredibly attractive' Charlotte but it's not that I was ugly...
"My angel, do you want a lemon candy?" Aunt Maddie said. "Come on, sit next to me dear." Aunt Maddie was my grandfather's sister, she was never married. She was short and had big blue eyes, and her hair were died blonde.
"Where is grandmother?" I asked
"She is in the next room making a call" aunt Maddie replied. "She doesn't want us to listen I guess. Oh gosh, I'm out of lemon candies! Gwendolyn can you please go get me some from the store?"
"Of course" I answered.
Charlotte got up from the couch, and then sat down again. Aunt Glenda looked at her hopefully.
"I still feel nothing" Charlotte said, which caused aunt Glenda to sigh.
"Wouldn't it be better not to wait on the first floor? What if you go to a century when this house didn't exist and you fall?" I asked Charlotte.
"Wouldn't it be better to keep your mouth shut when you don't know what you're talking about?" She asked back.
"The first time the person with the gene travels, he can go back only 150 years. This house exists for about 172. Here in the music room Charlotte is perfectly safe." Aunt Maddie explained to me. "The worst that can happen is to scare a couple of ladies who play music" she added.
"With this dress that's for sure" I whispered loud enough for aunt Maddie to hear.
Before she could reply the door opened and grandma walked in. As always she looked like she had swallowed a stick, or maybe more. One for her arms, one for her legs and one for her torso, which keeps the whole body in place. Her white hair were brushed back in a tight bun which made her look like a mean ballet teacher.
"A driver will be here any minute now. The De Villais family is waiting for us at the Temple. The moment Charlotte is back from her first time travel she will be sorted in the time machine."
I didn't understand one single thing from this sentence.
"What if it doesn't happen today?" Charlotte asked.
"Charlotte honey, you have already felt dizzy three times today." Aunt Glenda said
"Sooner or later it will happen" grandma added.
With that the three of them got up and left the room, leaving me and aunt Maddie alone.
"A goodbye would be nice you know!" Aunt Maddie said loudly to the door.
"Who are the De Villais?"
Some people who think they own the world... The bank in t he centre of London is theirs."
"And what do they want Charlotte for?"
"They have similar issues as she do"
"What issues?"
"They are time travelers. De Villais are the male travelers, while the Modrowse, us, are the female ones."
"So they have a Charlotte too?"
"A male one, yes... His name is Gideon I think."
"And is he waiting to get dizzy too?"
"No he is past that for the last two years."
"Oh.." Was all I could say. The thing was getting more complicated by the minute!
"And is this time machine?"
"It's a machine that helps the travelers-and only them- go to a particular time in the past. It works with blood I think."
"A time machine that works with blood." I repeated
"Exactly!" Aunt Maddie said.
"How do we know that it's Charlotte who has the gene and not... You for example?"
"It couldn't be me, thank god for that. The gene came from the family of your grandmother, not mine. The last one who had the gene before Charlotte was Lucy."
"What Lucy?" I asked.
"Your cousin Lucy, Harry's oldest daughter."
"Oh that Lucy..." Uncle Harry had two kids. The young one is Janet, she has two children herself, David and Daisy. Lucy was the old one, I never met her. I didn't know much for her either. She was something like the black sheep of the family. When she was 17 she ran out of the house and from then we hadn't heard anything from her.
"So Lucy had the gene?"
"Oh yes..." Aunt Maddie said. "Your grandmother almost had a heart attack when she left. it was horrible."
"I can imagine..."
"No no you can't. You don't even know the whole story. You don't know about how she left or that it all had to do with that young boy... GWENDOLYN!" She suddenly shouted, which caused me to just off my seat and fall on my bum.
"What happened?!"
"You were chewing your nails again."
"Oh.. Sorry"
"Now can you please go get me my Lemon candies?" She whined
"Yeah, sure, I'll go right now" I said smiling
I putted on my coat and ran out of the house to the way the store was. It was raining and I had already stepped in a couple of puddles. I was passing inform of a house which had roses next to the door when I tried to avoid another puddle full of water. Then I felt like my feet when swiped off the ground and I felt like I was on a roller coaster. Then everything went black.
