October 13th rolled around like any other day except that it fell on a Friday. Sam didn't consider himself to be particularly superstitious, but thought that had to mean it was either going to be the most cursed or the best day of luck he'd ever had. He didn't know whether he should strut out of his apartment or tiptoe to his car and it was kind of thrilling. He felt like he was living out a horror film. There was a chill in the air, hinting at a cold front sweeping in. Cooler air always made Sam feel light and unreasonably happy, and it was a rare occasion in Miami. It made him crave living somewhere colder, but he dreaded snow and missed the defrosting effect of the humid Miami heat every time he went on skiing vacations with his family.

On his drive to campus one great song after another played on his shuffle. It felt like a good sign. The sky was cloudy and dimmed the day, but he didn't mind. When he got to Cinema class, Peyton sat in her chair and waved hello like she did every day now that they started talking, but she was beaming today, just like him. She looked like she stole all of the sunshine and it was glowing out of her skin. She wore a shirt the color of forest green, the color he thought looked best on her, making her orange hair and watercolor brown freckles pop. Sam strutted over.

"Sam! Hey, I was thinking maybe we could get coffee after class and work on our essays for film together, what do you think?"

"Yeah, absolutely," he said, knowing he would miss his next class.
