These curious creatures are the saddest I've ever seen, their creator latches onto their back since birth, controlling every movement and prevents growth since day one. One can only muse as too how these characters would be if they weren't ravaged by such a terrible fate.

Okay, to address the elephant in the room, every oc is a self-insert to some degree. But, there is a clear difference between a character that has a few of your traits so you can write what you know and you given a species swap and a slight recolor.
That end bit was a bit generous though, this OC is you but with every special cool power you could think off, letting you live out the fantasy where you're the main, cool and popular one and your high school bullies have to bow to your feet.
These characters can be spotted during a RP session with a few simple questions:
Does you partner ever get mad when character can't do x/y/z, even though it completely derails the plot?
If so, self insert
Does your partner take any criticism of their oc as a attack on their work and them as a person?
If yes, self insert
Does your partner get extra pushy when you tell them no on an action, even when you've made it clear it makes you feel uncomfortable?
If yeah, you know.
These only become a problem when the author can't detach themselves from their creation, taking any slight against their character as some kind of attack on them and respond "accordingly"
