Chapter 2: A witness at death

Leah is on the block trying to do a real dive and not a cannon ball. I am laughing at her because this is the tenth time she had tried. We have been at the pool for about two hours now and I haven't thought about my mom that much. I watch as Leah takes her starting position and then leaps toward the pool. This results in a very painful belly flop and a big splash.

I laugh really hard and she laughs to. Now it is my turn, I take my place on the block and am about to go when I hear an all too familiar ring tone. I look up slightly and see Silvia answer it. The ring tone belongs to the hospital. I then dive into the pool not as bad as Leah, but still bad.

Then I get out and walk over to Silvia who's expression I can't read. She's one of those people that can really hold a blank face, so I don't know if it is good news or bad news. When she finally finishes and hangs up she tells Leah and I to quickly go change and that we have to go back to the hospital.

(Time skip to-the hospital)

We just arrived and my heart is beating so hard that I can feel it in my throat when I talk. So I decide I won't talk too much. We hop in the elevator and go to floor 4, momma had been on floor 2 last time so I know something is up. We finally get off the elevator after what feels like forever and walk up to the desk. "Hi miss my name is Silvia and this is Leah and Kaitlyn, we're here to see Helen Tears."

They lady behind the desk types something on the computer then says "down the hall, third one on the left, it's room 158."

We silently walk to room 158 and I will never forget what I saw when I walked through that door. I rush over to momma, all of her hair was shaved off now, not a strand in sight. She has what looks like a million tubes in her and her pulse on the radar doesn't look good. I know I am already in tears "am I too late" I think to myself. "Is she...dead?" I ask as a doctor walks in and you can bet I don't get my answer, instead he tells us to leave and that only family is allowed in. Well thank goodness I'm family because if I wasn't I would die. "She is family" Silvia says before I get the chance to. "Oh" says the doctor, "then my apologies you may come in, but be careful she is very sick." he says in a stern tone.

"Is she dead?" I ask for the second time hopping to get my answer too. "No, not yet." There's a moment of silence and then, "listen, you look like your old enough to know what's going on, so I need to tell you something. She's your mom right?" I look up at him and say, "Ya she is." "Well I'm going to be straight with you, your mom is dying and she doesn't have much time left. She can barely speak, but you may go see her, just be careful."

I can feel the hot tears trickling down my face. I slowly walk over to my mom and look down at her. She looks really bad, I close my eyes for a second holding back tears but open them when I here a small "Kay." I look at my mom her eyes are slightly open and staring into mine.

"Momma," I sigh,"Please don't go" I look back at the door and see a teary eyed Leah and Silvia. I asked the doctor if they can come in. Ok more like beg him, but he finally gives in.

We stay in here with her for an hour. By this time it was already 8:00 p.m. so Leah and Silvia leave to go buy some dinner for the three of us. I stay with my mom just in case, I don't want her to die when I leave. The doctor has gone to the bathroom so I have a few minutes alone with my mom.

"Momma, there is so much I am going to miss about you and I could list all of it, but the list is so long I might boar you to death" literally. "So instead I'm just going to tell you the best things, my favorite things. You love me, have always been there for me, and have helped me through the hardest of times. When daddy was announced lost you stayed strong for me and now I'm trying to stay strong for you. But I don't know if I can. I can't lose you too."

I look at my mom and see her smiling and I smile too. Then I here beeping. No, no no no! This can't be happening, not now. And the doctor isn't back yet. I can here them down the hall coming.
Then my mom motions for me to come closer. I put my ear to here lips and she says, "The fireflies, follow the fireflies........."
