His Blue Eyes Always Sparkling

Jay gasped, as did nearly every kid in the classroom. "Settle down, kids!" Mrs. Julius ordered, seating kids who'd gotten up to see what the loud crunching noise was.

"There's a car outside!" Carlos yelped, sitting back down. "It looks like Jenna's!". Jay didn't have to hear more. He immediately shot out of his seat, knocking the entire desk down, and bolted out of the classroom.

"Jay! Jay, stop this instant!" he ignored his English teacher's wishes.

Pulling his small flip-phone phone out of his pocket, he dialed 9-1-1 faster than he'd ever dialed anything in his life.

"We need help!" he exclaimed, streaking through the halls with seasoned grace, as he ran all last year, helping his oldest younger sister practice for her marathon. He knew he was rallying up everyone who could hear him, but he could hardly keep himself from screaming into the phone. It angered him how the lady on the other side of the reciever could be so calm. His best friend could be dead!!

He slammed through the doors, and quickly barked the street name to the lady.

"We'll be on our way," she told him, as be stared at the wreckage in horror. That sure was Jenna's car... Music stickers, and all...

She couldn't open her eyes.  Jenna could see everything but her eyes were closed. She felt herself hanging upside-down by her seat belt. She called for help but realized she didn't hear her voice. What was going on?  She was confused and trying to get up or at least open her eyes when she smelled it. Her car was catching fire.

Jay saw the flames flicker and, despite the woman's order not to, raced across the street, nearly hit by the cars racing by. The police weren't getting there fast enough! He swung open the door. Jenna hung from the seat upside down. He gasped as fire leaped out and raked hot talons down his hand. He took a deep breath, and wrapped his arms around her awkwardly, ignoring the fire tearing at his forearms. Smoke filled his lungs, and his eyes started to water. He choked as he fumbled to unlock the seat belt.

"Jenn..." his yelp was interrupted by a violent cough. This stupid thing!! It was supposed to help SAVE lives! Not this! The thought of losing Jenna quickly made him jam his thumb into the button, and it finally let go, snapping back and hitting his chin. He pulled her out with his burnt and bloody arms. He closed his eyes tightly, and knew that he needed to get her away from the burning car. He also knew it would hurt. His screech of pain turned into a cough as he sprinted across the road, collapsing in the grass in the school yard.

Jenna felt his arms wrap around her.  She saw the terrified look in his  eyes. His arms were too hot. She realized that the fire had probably burned him. She could hear their stupid English teacher wailing at Jay to "Get back here!" She could still smell smoke. Jenna felt flames lick her back. Her hair was on fire. Somehow,  she was still holding on to her song notebook. She wanted to grip it tighter but she couldn't move.

His eyes shut. The last thing he remembered was how hard it was to breathe. That was really stupid, wasn't it? When his blue eyes finally fluttered open again, he found himself on a hospital bed. Gauze was wrapped tightly around his arms, and many ivs poked into his biceps, pumping liquid into his blood. Small, plastic tubes climbed up his cheeks and poked into his nose, puffing clean oxygen into his nose.

Nine friendly faces stared at him with anxious eyes. The twins, Lia and Kelly, each had a small daisy in their hands for him, Rebecca, his eleven year old sister, stared at him with round eyes, Caleb's green eyes were puffy and red from crying, same with his mother, who was holding George. Jamie was trying to look like she didn't care, but he saw the relief in her expression, and Jasmine, his only full-blood relative, was still streaming from the eyes and nose.
