. . .

The sun kissed the sky, lighting the ground into a shimmer of diamond mist as the damp air brushed your cheeks rosy. Your eyes were camouflage, blending with the trees. You felt at home in the wild. Untainted. Untamed. Existing in beautiful simplicity. Life beyond the walls was everything your dad said it would be. He spoke of hills that rolled past the horizon, waters of salt vast and unknown, sands that waved over the ground in patterns and dunes. The world beyond the walls was a beautiful landscape of uncharted sovereignty. Arms swaying wildly, his hands would tell stories of hares and wolves, of mountains and oceans, as they cast shadows through dim candlelight. Every night he spoke of home. A home beyond the walls. A place you could be free. Holding his twins close, he would weep, heavy whiskey on his tongue as his body ached into you.

"I will free you someday," he would choke, deep sorrow padding every word with a sob.

You didn't know what he meant but you could feel it. The constraints of cobblestone roads and brick walls left you boned, raw and bare like your soul waited for you just beyond the shadows of captivity.

Freedom...

The air left your mouth a cloud as it floated past the tip of your nose, damp shiver slithering up the back of your wet cape. Leather and metal wrapped your hips, hooks tethering you ascended with the leaves.

"Taitus."

He came in like a hawk, soaring focused, cool eyes deepening your chill as he closed in. You met on a branch thick enough to support a horse and wagon with ease. Black hair sticky at his forehead, it dripped wet down the boulders of his cheeks. Your hand moved in salute,

"Captain."

Eyes clear as the rain, you drank from their beauty. Levi sleeved his forehead,

"Status report."

You hummed, damp cotton challenging your professionalism as it clung to the broad of his pecs,

"You're all wet, sir."

"That's what happens when it rains. Status report."

"Right. Sorry. Squad 3 and 4 are gathering previsions west. Squad 2 is doing parameters. No reports of titan sightings—do you need a towel or?"

"Squad 1?"

"Setting up camp."

"Good work."

His shoulder brushed, moving next to you to access your vantage point, he cast a watchful eye over operations below. The sunset wrapped his silhouette warm and vibrant. You hadn't stopped thinking about him since he kissed you, since you tasted the strong of his tongue as it drugged you deep. Lethargic yet so alive. Distracted and distant, you felt yourself pull back from everyone around you. The Captain did the same, providing limited interactions of neutral passivism. Days turned into nights with words stuck tight in your chest, squeezing your heart with a viper grip that left you breathless. Your first field day came with the threat of being alone in the deep of nature with the man that kept your heart wild. Opportunity had finally come knocking, but it wasn't the outcome you had hoped for. His breath fell over you like ice, freezing you in place as he spoke down your neck,
