"You have a suspected murder? In your closet?" George exclaimed.
Lockwood nodded, leaning against the kitchen table as his finger traced some of the drawings. This was the only time his escape attempt had been unsuccessful.
George on the other hand was practically waltzing around the room, as Flo watched him with a grin sitting atop a counter.
"Knew you'd have a soft spot for 'er" The woman mouthed. After being briefly informed of the situation she had descided to remain downstairs, giving her friend some space.
"I do not have a soft spot. I simply want to amend for a wrong done to her."
"Sure." Flo nodded, but the sarcasm laced in her voice was enough to convey her disbelief at his statement.
"Either way we now have an incredibly powerful psychic murder in our house. And we could be her next target!"
"I told you George," lockwood huffed, "she didn't kill them. This type three source has a much stronger influence than what we've seen before."
"So we should just take her word for it? And let her stay?"
"She's staying with me." Flo declared. "Until this mess with Fittes is sorted she'll stay with me in the underground. It's safer there."
"What if she hurts you?" George asked. The couple shared a look, a silent message being passed between them. Lockwood raised his brows at the sight, not having realised George of all people would have been able to understand the fine details of a message conveyed in an expression only.
He knew Flo well enough however to know what it was. It was a stfu look.
"Fine." George sighed in defeat. "What are we going to tell Lucy then? She'll be furious."
"Lucy is not my main concern currently. She needn't know and Christina has other things to focus on rather than revenge. Which is why I'm asking for your help, George."
"What can I do?"
"Research. I need you to find everything possible on the Cult of Belial, a Father Crawler, his son and a young girl called Hannah."
"Hannah Risby." Flo added.
With a grim nod of determination George instantly went towards the library of the house, where his magical mirror of knowledge (also known as his desktop) awaited him.
"You know too?" Lockwood asked Flo.
"I helped her gather the evidence." Flo clarified, going to follow George. Lockwood grunted an 'okay' at her as she exited, leaving him alone with his thoughts. It was silent again, apart from the distant murmurings of the couple.
But then there was another noise. Floorboards creaking. Chrissy was up, and Lockwood had descided that questions had to answered.
Somewhere in London:
She truly felt like one of those conspiracy nutcases, chasing false hope and whispy evidence. When the signed forms were pushed in front of her however, she had to admit it provided her with some relief that maybe she wasn't completely insane.
"I know." Godwin said, a lock of blonde hair wrapped around her finger. "I thought I was crazy too. But we're not. This entire thing is a plot to take down Lockwood and Co."
"How can I trust you? You work for Fittes. For all I know Penelope set you up to this."
"Look," the other girl sighed, "I don't like you. In fact I think you're wasting your potential on some silly boy who will only get you killed. But that is why I'm doing this. Because I don't want to see you or anyone else killed. Rivalry is one thing, murder another. I can't just sit and watch innocent people get slaughtered."
It was a rare moment of warmth from Godwin, glacier blue eyes now a warm tropical sea instead as she sipped at her drink.
Lucy looked down at the signed agreements again. A plot to take down Lockwood and Co. It did sound like the sort of thing Penelope would do. And with Lockwood already deluded by the story Chrissy had apparently spun it would be up to her to make him see the truth.
The girls shook hands as they said goodbye.
It was a bad idea to walk home alone, but with the sun rising steadily Lucy knew the threats were minimal.
That was until a gloved hand wrapped around her mouth, the drug being deeply inhaled in her startled breath.
Then darkness consumed her.
