Relationship Compatibility

One of my favorite parts of the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) is thinking about how the personalities would interact with each other in various situations.

I love analyzing which types are more likely to be friends and which are more likely to be in conflict. Then, I love taking it a step further and understanding exactly why there are these particular tendencies.

The way to go deeper, dear reader, is found within the cognitive functions, the building blocks of the personality types. 🤗

If you don't know what they are, I highly suggest watching Frank James's video. He explained it much better than I could.

Moving on, I'll analyze a few types' compatability with INFJs using cognitive functions.

I'm only analyzing the three types that I believe have the strongest compatibility with INFJs. These are just my thoughts though. Keep in mind that anybody of any type can have a great or poor relationship. It depends on their maturity and willingness to compromise. Also note that no two people of the same personality are exactly alike.

INFJ- Ni, Fe, Ti, Se

#3. INTJ- Ni, Te, Fi, Se

The Architect is the third most compatible type for Advocates in my opinion. The obvious thing to point out about these two types is that they share a dominant and inferior function. In other words, they understand each other's strongest strengths and worst weaknesses.

They can show each other different perspectives through their thinking/feeling preferences. INFJs can help INTJs be more trusting and tolerant of others, while INTJs can help INFJs be more logical and confident in their decisions.

These types can help each other feel understood and appreciated on a deep level that they both crave. It's not something they normally receive from others, so it's an incredible feeling.

These types understand each other's need for alone time and they can enjoy comfortable silences together. INTJ x INFJ couples might "disappear" for a while when they go into hermit mode. Chances are they're at home binging a show together or taking a needed at-home vacation.

#2. ENFP- Ne, Fi, Te, Si

The Campaigner comes in second place! I adore this personality type!

You may be wondering why ENFPs place higher than INTJs when they don't share any functions with the INFJ. If you look at the order you might notice something cool: the functions are in the same order with the only difference being the attitude (introverted vs. extraverted). These types understand and compliment each other beautifully.

The ENFP and INFJ are shadow types, meaning they have the same middle letters and different outer letters. Shadow types are often very compatible and get along well.

The best relationships are built off of enough common ground, so that people can understand each other, but enough differences that they can help each other learn and grow. They compliment each other like yin and yang. ENFPs can provide this for INFJs.

The possible downside is that with different decision-making functions (thinking vs. feeling) these types may disagree about various important decisions. ENFPs have Fi and Te, meaning they deal with emotions internally and logical problem-solving outwardly. INFJs do the opposite. Conflict can arise when these types come to complete different decisions or when they don't understand each other's thought process.

#1. ENTP- Ne, Ti, Fe, Si

Finally, in first place we have the ENTP!

The reason that the ENTP beats the ENFP is that they will be more compatible long-term when it comes to decision-making. Both INFJs and ENTPs have Fe and Ti. They just prioritize them differently. Though their priorities are slightly different, they will be able to understand how their partner's conclusions were reached.

Other than that, the reasoning is similar to what was said about the ENFP. ENTPs compliment INFJs beautifully. They are able to understand each other, but also have those keys differences that foster growth.

INFJs love feeling understood. They strive to understand others deeply, but rarely get that in return. ENTPs can provide this special, ideal type of partnership to INFJs.

Both ENTPs and INFJs strive for growth. They will enjoy having a partner that shares their curiosity and desire for constant improvement. They will enjoy having a partner that pushes them to be better by bringing new perspectives and ideas.

These are just my thoughts. Again anybody can have a fantastic relationship with any type. I know as an INFJ I tend to fantasize about the "perfect" relationship and usually that only includes the most compatible types. Please don't decide for or against a relationship just because of some compatability chart or score though! You could miss out on something incredible!

Best wishes, dear reader! ;-)
