Good job, you've survived another day. By the third day, I believe I've met Salvatrix and Matheo. They prove to be good allies. I've learned not to bother with learning Latin. They speak it all the time. They have the enchanted blades, the Encrismoses. The two blades are enchanted with the deadliest poison on Earth, currently- isbon. It can kill any living thing with one strike. Now, you've survived three days and will go on to survive more, if you don't make the mistake Truan did. Never take off the blindfold. Even when you question why you have to wear such a ridiculous item, never take it off. Promise. Promise yourself. -X
I nodded to myself as I closed the sketchbook and tied the blindfold around my eyes. Salvatrix and Matheo were still asleep. I wasn't planning on leaving, even before I learned about their Encrismoses. I wondered who this Truan was, though.
"Ah, Zero is awake." Matheo said from behind me. I turned around.
"That's not my name."
"Until you tell us your name, that's what it is, amicus meus." Matheo stood up.
"You know they don't speak Latin, Matheo." I didn't even hear Salvatrix get up behind me.
"Whatever. We need to move. That bestia said that there would be more of them coming. Get your stuff together, we're advancing."
Salvatrix put a hand on my shoulder, "He's always like this. Too serious. I need to get him a girlfriend."
"Why would a partner help?" I asked, putting my hand atop hers.
"To help control his anger. To him, sex is the answer to everything." Salvatrix pulled her hand away.
"You know I can hear you, soror. Lust isn't the only thing that satisfies my anger. And, besides, you know I have no need for a sexual partner. Even so, females would be my last resort." Matheo walked up to Salvatrix and patted her on the head.
"You used to hire scorta all the time, frater meus. Don't tell me you feel no sexual attraction." Salvatrix pushed past him and grabbed my hand, intertwining her fingers with mine. My face went red, but the blindfold hid it from the two.
"Prostitution is illegal where we used to live, Salvatrix. Even if I did, I would have hired no females. Now, let's stop this bickering and get a move on, yes? The beasts will be gaining on us every second we sit here like fresh meat." Matheo walked in front of us.
"Sí, sí. Tienes razón, mi hermano." Salvatrix spoke. She walked after him, still holding my hand.
"Sh." Matheo abruptly stopped, "I hear something. Hermana, get your Encrismos."
Salvatrix unsheathed her sword and I heard the sound of Matheo doing the same.
There was a loud thud from behind me, so, of course, I whirled around to see what it was.
"Sorry, sorry! I wasn't watching where I was going... damn blindfold." A younger male voice came from the direction of the thud. Through the blindfold, I saw a bookshelf had been knocked over.
"Who are you?" Salvatrix questioned. Her grip on my hand tightened.
"Oh, uh, I'm Truan! Truan Park. I, uh, was just sitting in my apartment in, uh, Queens. New York. Next thing I know, I find a blindfold with a note attached to it." There were footsteps coming closer.
I didn't recognise the name at first, but then it hit me. The name from the sketchbook. He was going to take off his blindfold.
"Truan Park?" Matheo spoke up, walking over to Truan.
"Wait, Matheo? Matheo Almiresz? My buddy, my old pal!" They hugged.
"Yes." Matheo pulled away from the hug, "This is my hermana, Salvatrix. We recently came across this person who refuses to give up the information of their name." Matheo spoke.
"Ah, Matheo's sister! It's nice to finally meet you. Well, not really, but technically, I guess?" Truan shrugged and then felt around to hug Salvatrix.
I removed her hand from my own, crossing my arms and moving my head downward. I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Zero, this is Truan. Him, our other friends, and I used to work together designing computer programs." Matheo spoke, patting my shoulder.
"Hi." I stuck my hand out and touched someone else's a few times before actually shaking hands.
"What should I call you? I assume Zero isn't your real name." Truan spoke, pulling his hand away from mine.
I thought for a minute, trying to come up with a name.
"Xiofan." I responded. I remembered the name from something. What I couldn't remember was where I heard it from.
"Xiofan? Interesting. That's Chinese, yes?" Salvatrix said, her blurred body shifting.
"是的,我實際上是中國人的一部分,我把它作為第二語言來學習。" I said, suddenly remembering how to speak traditional Chinese.
"Now we're even. We can speak Latin, and you Chinese." Salvatrix said, "Now, we must get moving. Truan, will you join us?"
"Um, if that's okay." I saw his blurred head nod.
"Good. Alright, I'll lead. You three follow my footsteps." Matheo started moving, Salvatrix tollowing him with Truan and I close behind."Why do we need these blindfolds?" Truan whispered to me after a while of walking.
"To protect ourselves from the beasts that want to murder us." I whispered back.
"How do we even know what's out there? What if these beasts are just a part of our imagination, weurd and wild?" Truan whispered again.
"I don't wish to take a chance. I advise you don't, either." My voice trembled, remembering the entry from the sketchbook I held in my hand.
...if you don't make the same mistake Truan did. Never take off the blindfold...
"But I take risks. This could all be some sort of goverment scheme for population control! There dould be absolutely nothing out there, Xiofan. Someone has to look." Truan insisted.
"It's dangerous. Don't be an idiot." My hand was shaking. What would actually happen if one of us looked? Was there really nothing out there? Was the Library a lie?
"I'm doing it." Truan stopped walking.
"Matheo, Salvatrix." He called out. The others ceased their movements.
"I'm taking off the blindfold." His hand reached up to his face as he started to remove his blindfold.
There were incoherent whisperings in the air. The voices were whispy and blended together like paint, making it even harder to decipher what they were saying.
I felt an object hit my foot. I bent down and picked it up.
It was Truan's blindfold.
Unholy screaming filled the air as Truan began to fall over, as if a hydraulic press was smashing him like a pancake.
The screaming continued for another minute or so before it stopped and Truan's body went limp.
"It's so beautiful. You three, you three must see." Truan's voice was now the same as the others, wispy and mysterious.
"You made a mistake, amigo. May your soul forever rest in peace." Matheo said as he kneeled down by Truan's body.
"Does the spirit have any final words?" Salvatrix asked, doing the same.
"You must look. Salvatrix, you can have the life you've always wanted. Matheo, you can have a perfect relationship. And you, Xiofan. You can have your son back." Truan's voice called, "All you three need to do is look."
Matheo unsheathed his sword and plunged it into Truan's body, missing the first time but striking the second. The incoherent whispers stopped, and his voice was never heard again.
Truan was dead."Si videris vel audis defunctum in Bibliotheca, corpus destrue, et omnia valebunt."
"If you see or hear the deceased in the Library, destroy the body and all will be well."
"如果你在圖書館看到或聽到死者,毀掉屍體,一切都會好起來的。"
"Si ve o escucha al difunto en la Biblioteca, destruya el cuerpo y todo estará bien."
The Library's holographic projection spoke in all four languages. I listened to her as the Library sung a lullaby. Somehow it knew when I was awake when everyone else was asleep.
"Tili-tili-bom...
Zakroy glaza skoreye...
Kto-to khodit za oknom...
I stuchitsya v dveri..."
She sang the Russian lullaby for a couple minutes before I fell asleep. I was surprised I even did get any rest that night.
