20th March 1968, USA tour
"Hahaha, you must be kidding!" said a groupie to joking Keith, who was mostly the center of attention on tours. Roger and Pete laughed at some of Keith's jokes, too. Only John, who was always amused, was totally silent today. Groupies, to Pattie's personal astonishment, weren't talking to John very often. Maybe they were afraid of him, maybe he was too quiet and sharply-spoken for them, but one thing he was for sure- he was too great for them, they didn't deserve him and his sarcastic, cheeky and adorable chipmunk smile that popped upon his face everytime Pattie or Keith said some joke. Pattie was in the hotel bar, the rest was in her's, Keith's and John's room. She had a glass of water in front of her and she was obviously drowning in a sea of toughts. She bit her lip and slowly headed to her room. As she stopped before the door, she sighed very loudly and opened them.
"John, I need to talk to you." she blurted as she went to the room full of people. John's sad, grey eyes searched her and he confusingly stood up.
"Wait! You can't drag him outta here right now!" said amused Keith, who was clearly a bit drunk.
"Yes I can, Keef, watch me." Pattie responsed by sort of irritated, but still calm and silent voice. John came to her and went of the room. Pattie followed him and closed the door. Now they were standing in hallway.
"What's up?" John asked. Silence was a response. Pattie gave him a guilty look right into his eyes.
"John...something happened, you see..." she started silently.
"What do you mean happened?" he asked a bit frightfuly.
"You remember how we came from this party like three months ago?"
"Pattie, we talked about that already, it was a mistake, I'm terribly sorry, but we promised we gonna forget it for not ruining our friendshi-"
"John I'm pregnant."
Terrific, terrific silence filled the whole hallway of the hotel. John was speechless, his grey, sad, almost teary eyes were locked in Pattie's beautiful and concerned hazel ones. He gave her a shocked grin.
"And why you're telling me?" he tried to make an awful sarcastic in-joke. Pattie's mouth turned to something between badly hidden smile and raged shock.
"WITH YOU, YOU UGLY EVIL OLD BASTARD!" she yelled and she banged her fist on his arm hardly. Her poorly hidden amusement in her voice (she shared John's relatively cruel sense of humor) made John laugh even harder. Some old pair passed by, this scene was very strange to them. When John stopped his frustrated and nervous laugh, he looked back to Pattie's eyes.
"What we gonna do now?" he remarked silently.
"I don't know. I just...I don't know." Pattie responsed.
"How long do you know it?"
"Um, about month and a half."
"Why the fuck you didn't told me?" John said sharply.
"I was afraid, man. Are you surprised? I get pregnant with my best friend, who I suddenly fell in love with after four years of living with him." she chuckled, thinking all that harm was in vain.
"You're in love with me?" John asked by slow, surprised voice. She lost her voice and averted her guilty eyes of him. He came closer to her and hugged her.
"You know, you're not alone in it. Same thing happened to me, actually."
"You've been the biggest dickhead on earth, too?" Pattie cynicaly muttered into John's chest. He grinned a bit.
"I can say so. I fell in love with one girl that is very close to me. I can say she is my best friend. Best of best ones. She's beautiful, in an extraordinary way. She does share my sense of humor, the one that girls mostly do not like. I don't know how it happened, but I can't even look to her eyes, no matter how much I want. I love her that much."
"Oh, that's sweet. But your little summer romance doesn't solve our problem." Pattie responsed after a while, giving John a bitter revenge for his joke. He looked at her and with absolutely straight face he kissed her deeply. When he leaned away, he grinned a bit.
"You know, now when you're pregnant, it would be weird if we were not a married couple, so will you marry me?" John asked on purpose with nonchalant tone. Pattie laughed a bit.
"Yep, why not." she responsed sharply. John still had his straight face.
"I am not joking." he said silently. Pattie stopped laughing. After few seconds of staring at him, she came to John as close as she could and she stood on her tip toes.
"Neihter do I." she whispered into John's neck, went to the room and left smiling John behind closed door.
