JOSH AND CHRIS SAT down on the couch, Matt taking his space on the other side of Josh. Josh put his arm around Matt's shoulders for a moment and hugged him close then released him.
Robin stood by the recliner while Conner sat in it, Maddy sitting in his lap and laying her head on her brother's chest.
"Where have you guys been?" Matt demanded, not sparing his uncle and aunt for a moment.
Chris reached behind Josh and put her hand on Matt's head for a moment then smiled at the other three children. "We're sorry for keeping you all waiting," she began, grabbing Josh's hand and squeezing it. "Traffic and riots held us up. We got stuck downtown after a bunch of cars crashed into one another at a four-way stop since some asshole practically ran over someone."Robin tapped Conner on the shoulder and leaned close to his ear. "Come with me for a sec."
Conner nodded and sat Maddy down in the chair, the little girl blinking and waving at Conner sleepily.
Conner followed Robin into the dining room, Matt's eyes following them while he remained on the couch. Robin looked past Conner for a moment, part of him had hoped that Matt would've followed. Conner snapped his fingers in front of Robin's face. Robin lightly smacked his hand away, irritated at his friend for doing something so obnoxious. "What'd you need?" Conner asked, yawning and pushing his fingers back against his palm, earning loud pops from each of them.
"What happens if Chris and Josh kick us out?" Robin immediately questioned.
Conner looked startled for a moment then exhaled. "No clue, man. I guess just hope they don't?"
"I'm not really down for laying my hopes and trusts on adults."
"Gimme a break, Rob- you aren't down for laying your trusts on anyone!"
"Shh! Shut up, dude!" Robin snapped softly.
He looked around Conner, past the entryway, and at the couch that was nearly directly in sight from where they stood, making sure Matt was still engrossed in whatever Chris and Josh were talking about.
Conner scoffed. "You are such a pussy sometimes, Rob," the taller boy sneered. "Matt isn't gonna get mad for your worryin'. He knows that's all you do."
"You're being a dickwad, Conner."
Conner rubbed his nose, the pale, freckles skin quickly becoming pink then a light red, and shrugged. "Usually," was all he said before turning and going back into the living room.
Robin sighed and scratched a little space on his neck right behind his jaw, his short nails catching on a healing scab. He cringed at the feeling and sighed, leaning against the creaky old table, staring at the floor. What if Chris and Josh sent them off? What would they do? Where would they go? How would they survive? Two teens and a little had no chance alone.
Robin scoffed and rubbed his face. It was getting late and his body was beginning to feel the events of the day wearing down on him. He stretched, groaning as some bones popped, and yawned.
He made his way back to the living room, going back across to take his place standing by the recliner.
Chris and Josh were just sitting there with Matt, not even speaking. Conner have Robin a long look, one that told Robin 'This is getting a little too awkward for my liking. Please do something.' Robin smiled at his friend's desperate look of anguish and kept himself from laughing. "Uh, hey, Matt?" Robin stated, catching his best friend's attention and breaking the silence, "bed situation?"
Matt got up quickly. "Right, yeah, uh..." He looked around.
"Got extra pillows and blankets?" Conner piped up, rocking in the recliner with a dozing Maddy in his lap. "Mads can take the couch and I'll sleep in the chair. Just need some blankets."
Chris got up and nodded, brushing her hands on her pants. "Of course, of course," she quickly made her way to a closet close to the front door, kicking hers and Josh's extra shoes to the side. She dug around and pulled out a stack of blankets, a small pillow on top of the stack, sitting them on the couch where she had sat.
Matt looked to Robin and raised his brows a bit. "Yup, you're stuck with me," the brunette responded.
Josh got up and nodded. "Well, I guess we can go ahead and call it a night then!" He tussled Matt's blonde hair. "'Night, kid. See y'a in the morning. 'Night, boys!" Josh made he way over to the staircase, pausing by the recliner for a moment. "Need any help with Maddy?"
"Nope. I got her. Thanks, though," Conner adjusted Maddy in his arms, tucking his arm under her knees and the other under her back, lifting her with ease.
Robin watched Chris touch Matt's head for a moment then join Josh by the bottom of the stairs, the couple going up together. Matt moved to grab the pillow at the top of the stack of blankets his aunt got out and laid by the arm rest. Conner laid Maddy down then grabbed one of the blankets and unfolded it, covering Maddy with it, then repeating the action again. The little girl blinked up at Conner for a minute then stretched, mumbled out 'Turn off the light,' then drifted off to sleep.
Conner smiled then grabbed the last couple of blankets for himself. "I'll see y'all in the morning."
Matt and Robin said their goodnights before heading down the hall off the living room to where Matt's room was.
Robin opened the door and went straight for the bed, quickly getting in and grabbing one of the two comforters Matt had, wrapping it around his body and laying down.
Matt joined more slowly, playfully yanking away some of the comforters, and settling down to sleep.
