--𝐏𝐀𝐈𝐒𝐋𝐄𝐘 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐂𝐄𝐃 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐅 to get used to it. The loneliness. Sure Jesse was there, talking her through every time her powers got the better of her, waiting as Zoom gave her mercy and allowed her that tiny injection. But she still faced loneliness.

It had been months where all she could do was stare at the cement wall and listen. Listen to the pain Zoom forced Jesse to endure. Listen to Jesse cry out in pain to her, for her father. Some days for death.

She was alone in her cage. Alone in her guilt, her shame.

"It should be me," she whispered to the air one day.

There was a silence before Jesse spoke up. "What?"

"It should be me. Not you. This is not your fight."

"And so it's your's?" Jesse's voice, while weak, stood firm

"That's not what I mean...I can take it. Whatever Zoom is doing, I know I can take it. So no. It shouldn't be you."

"That's not fair," she whispered. "Just because you are able to take it doesn't mean you should. You don't deserve this. Neither of us do."

Paisley was silent, staring at her notches in the wall that marked her days. She stopped after 61. "I can't help but feel like I do though."

Confusion clouded over Jesse, but Paisley went on. "I was so blind to it all. He told me what I wanted to hear...and used me."

Regret flooded her body, consuming and drowning her. "But god the signs were right there! Ever since that moment in the cafe. He didn't want me. He wanted Phantom. He wanted power."

Just as her words left her mouth, blue lightning flooded the room for just a moment, leaving only one thing behind.

"You've always been so smart paloma."
