I didn’t even want to be here tonight but now I’m doing what I know best, caring for hurt people. Thankfully I am trained in traumatic emergencies. My thoughts are rushing all over the place, ‘how fast can we get an ambulance here’, ‘is she okay’, ‘why is the taxi driver okay but not the girl’, ‘where did the other car drive off to’. I lay her down on the grass away from the shards of glass shimmering in the light from the trees. I turn her head to the left just to find a small cut above her ear bleeding out.

“CALL 911!” I scream out over and over again. Nobody notices this girl dying in my own arms, I run as fast as I can to alert people. “EVERYONE, A GIRL IS DYING CALL 911 PLEASE. SHE NEEDS HELP!” I howl. I run back to her and scramble as I take off my shirt to compress the cut. I hear everyone mumbling “who would come this late to a new years eve party”, my blood starts to boil. Why is everyone so focused on why she showed up late instead of trying to call the police? I watch a girl slowly run up to us, as soon as she sees the body, she turns just as white as the girl who is unconscious in my lap.

“JADE, PLEASE, YOU CAN’T LEAVE ME. I CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU. I LOVE YOU! Please, Jade, I can’t”, she bawls.

“Are you… Jade’s friend?” I ask softly.

“My Jade. What happened, please tell me”, Her sobs starting to slow down.

“I promise I’ll tell you, can you call an ambulance first?”

“Yes, of course, I’m so sorry I didn’t come over sooner”

While she pulls out her phone to call the police, my thoughts go silent. If the ambulance doesn’t make it quick, she could die of blood loss. My only wish right now is to get her to the hospital and see her alive. I slowly look down and imagine her waking up right now. I imagine the fear in her eyes, the tightness of her muscles, the tears streaming gently down her face, and the joy of her friend seeing she’s conscious. Red and blue lights cover Jade’s face and I snap into reality, this girl is dying in my lap. If she dies it's my fault for not being quick enough.

I watch as the medics carefully place her onto a bed and take her away. I reach out to her friend to see if I could get her number for updates. She’s already in the ambulance with Jade. As I watch them drive away quickly into the distance, I wonder about Jade and who she is.
