Devin #4 woke up to his 7 am alarm, an hour earlier than the rest of the world. The council members at Devin were forced to get seven hours of sleep every night, a con that came with the job. Their work began at 7 in the morning and ended at midnight. It was a seventeen-hour shift they worked but for the council members, it couldn't be better. Being the chosen Devin's that helped the rest of the population live with the highest standard of living was all the reward they needed. And on top of that, it wasn't bad. It wasn't like they were working hard labor that would need rest. The shift included meetings, experiments, interviews, and many breaks. #4 loved to spend his free time watching his best friend and only friend, Devin #3007's shows and movies they helped direct. While watching those shows and movies, he would play solitaire, chess, checkers, and do crossword puzzles. All to keep the brain functioning and ideas flowing.
As a council member, #4 made less than minimum wage and less than the poorest of the Devin's. Low income Devins made 60,000 dollars a year and as a council member, he made only 10,000. It wasn't something he minded however, because most of his salary came from tax dollars and those tax dollars gave him a free place to stay, food, entertainment, and all the machines and items he would need to better Devin and its people. It was a very rewarding job that only the most worthy Devin's worked at and because of that, he would work free and still find it enjoyable and meaningful.
#4 wasted no time in getting ready for the day. Taking a quick shower after brushing his teeth, he got dressed in black loose-fitting cargo pants, a black sweater with a long-sleeve shirt underneath, and his black sneakers that had drawings of eyes and silly shapes all over the soles drawn on by himself. After dressing and combing his short, brown, straight hair, he grabbed purple and white eyeliner and drew two lines, one of each color, on his eyes that flowed vertically down. He looked at himself in the mirror, he looked beautiful and ready to start work. But first, breakfast with the rest of the council members.
#4 walked down the halls and through multiple rooms to make it into the kitchen. It had been six months since he was accepted into the council of Devins, and he reminisced about his first few days here. Exploring the Dana and getting lost when trying to find his way from one room to the next. But once he learned the layout of the Dana, he realized it wasn't difficult to navigate. Starting from the entrance, the left side had all the bedrooms and living rooms. Movie theatres, regular living rooms, and a living room mixed with a few games like chess, checkers, darts, and pool. To the middle of the Dana, or straight forward, if at the entrance laid the other rooms. Kitchen, dining rooms, arcades, bars, storages, libraries. And to the left of the entrance was the work area. Where all the rooms that helped maintain the world were scattered across. Lots of experimenting laboratories, computer systems for the population, taxes, surveys, energy, food production, and more.
He was making his way to the main dining room, so he moved towards the middle of Dana. He saw part of the council already there, he and #5 were the only ones missing. They were talking, and when they looked to see who was standing at the doorstep, stopped their conversations to greet him. "Good morning, 4!" They all said in almost perfect unison. He waved and took his seat at the table.
4 flinched and had to close his eyes to ignore the piercing voice of someone he despised dearly. For no particular reason other than she was a loud, overly eager, giddied individual that woke up with an energy that did not die, ever. It was Devin #5. She had just entered the dining room and was skipping away with a bright smile that hurt 4's eyes, shielding himself like a vampire exposed to light. "Good morning, everyone. How was everyone's beautiful morning!" She hugged everyone, and 4 just gave her a quick pat on the arm. It was incredible how annoying she was able to be. From the first day 4 met her, he knew he would hate her. And yet, he felt horrible to think that. She was an amazing and smart council member that had been helping many Devin's since getting invited to the council. It was her personality. Her awful, bright and positive attitude. He would much rather have 3007's numb, expressionless, and emotionless demeanor with everyone he met than be anywhere near the Devin's who matched 5's energy. It was repulsive and quite literally made his head hurt; he needed the strength of a thousand Devin's to not drink his way out of being near 5.
