"Good Morning, Miss Carmichael!"
"Howdy, Miss Carmichael!"
"Good day to yoy, Miss C!"The different people spoke aloud in greeting as Ophelia walked through the office, her heels clicking against the checker-tile floors. It was a beautiful, crisp summer morning, with the sky a gorgeous blue and the sun basking down through the windows with the comforting warmth of a good day.
And it was supposed to be a good day, as that night Ophelia was going to watch a very promising space themed musical thing at the local theatre. From what she saw, it had a lot of potential to be adapted to the big screen as her next movie project. She felt her tail wag happily as she thought about the day's events as she made her way down the hall to where her Office was.
Her good mood was quickly diminished, however, when she saw an unsettlingly familiar silhouette in the window of her office. She got closer and her heart sank as she realized who it was. She quickly ducked down out of sight, sneaking over to the desk of her secretary, Brittany.
"Brittany..."She hissed as Brittany glanced at her, "why is my ex-husband in my office?!?"
"He said it was urgent. Like, really urgent. So urgent that he wanted to book the earliest appointment he could with you."
"whyyyy???"
"Something to do with family stuff, I guess. That's all he could tell me last night. It sounded like he was really upset."
Ophelia's heart lept to her throat at those words.
"Oh, goodness gracious," Ophelia rubbed her face slowly before shaking herself off, "That's fine. I'm fine. I'll get this over with before our three o'clock with the executives."
"Sounds good, I'll call them while you're dealing with him."
"Thank you, Brittany."She straightened herself out, brushing her pants suit off before slowly making her way back to her office. She gripped the doorknob, taking a moment to do a few deep breaths and collect herself before walking in. Just as she thought, there at the seat right in front of her desk sat Jimmy Crystal, her ex-husband.
However, he wasn't sitting in the way he usually sat. He was almost hunched over, head in his hands before he quickly looked up at her, hie eyes following her as she walked around her desk to her chair. They seemed almost bloodshot red, and from the way he was acting, it seemed like he had just stopped crying.
"Jimmy...what's wrong?" Ophelia sat down at her desk, "Did something happen? Brittany said you said something about family stuff. Is Porcha ok?"
"You remember the...the space opera thing? The one Porcha starred in that you really wanted to see, but couldn't?" Jimmy spoke softly, voice slightly hoarse.
"Uh..yes. Did something happen to Porcha!?" Her mind raced as she asked, jumping of course to the worst of conclusions.
"No, no! Not to Porcha,Porcha's fine, but th-the show itself."
"Oh, god..What happened?"
"One of the guys I partnered with...one that i thought I could trust...kinda took the money..took the actors...everything and just booked it..Porch' and I were left behind as laughing stocks as the show hundreds of people paid to watch appeared half done..." Jimmy's head sunk back into his hands, his ears drooping down.
"Oh my god! How dare he?!" She shouted, slamming her fist down on the desk, rattling her coffee mug.
"I know, Ophelia! I know!"Ophelia looked down at her lap, fiddling with her bracelet as her mind raced. She didn't want anything to do with him..but her daughter, on the other hand? That was a different story. She couldn't just leave her little girl in the dust, that's not what good mother's do.
"And I know I don't deserve your help..especially after everything i've done...everything I put you through when we were married and all that...but..." Jimmy looked down at the ground, slightly scuffing it with his shoes, "I'm doing this for Porcha..ya know?""Yea..I...I understand, Jimmy."
His head slowly looked up at her, with Ophelia meeting his gaze. She couldn't help but look away as she thought about ways she could help them. Then, after a moment, she rubbed the back of her neck and let out a long, deep sigh.
"Look..if i can get you and Porcha involved in my next movie, the turnout should be enough to get you back on your feet. Then, when you inevitably make another hit play, that should help you more."
"You sure?"
"Yea....but remember this, Jimmy," Ophelia's voice then turned cold as she put her hands on her desk and stared deep into her ex's eyes, "This ain't for you. This is for Porcha. And so help me, if I find out your either lying or hurting my daughter, I will see to it that you never even taste the glory of fame ever again.""I understand, Ophelia."
"Just...I'll call ya when I find somewhere to fit you two in, ok? Just....get out of my office."
"Alright. I'll see ya around?"
"Whatever."
Ophelia put her head in her hands as she heard the footsteps exit her office, with the door closing with a soft click. Then, she glanced up at the picture of her and her daughter that sat framed on her desk next to her coffee mug, reaching over and picking it up. It was a simple photo, taken a few years back when the two decided to go on a Mom and Daughter trip to New York.
The two look many photos during the trip, but the one that was her favorite was the one they took in front of The Majestic, when the two got tickets to see 'Guys and Dolls'. Funnily enough, that trip was what inspired her to draft a screenplay that ended up being one of Carmichael Studios most popular movies..
She couldn't help but feel a sense of longing. She knew it was selfish to want her daughter all to herself, seeing as her and Jimmy appeared to get along just fine. Porcha loved her daddy, and she deserved to have him in her life if he treated her well. All those thoughts made her head feel so crowded as she also began thinking of how the hell she was gonna help her family out of this pickle Jimmy got them into..
"Porcha, baby...Momma's gonna make everything right. I promise.." She said softly, leaning back in her hand and holding the picture frame to her chest.
"Miss Carmichael?" Brittany's voice startled her from her thoughts as she peeked into the office.
"Yes? What's up? Can I help you?"
"The executives were just on the phone. They said they wanted to cancel the three o'clock since one of their wives just went into labor."
"Oh...ok! That's fine. Thank you."The door closed once more as Ophelia let out a sigh, setting the photo back onto the desk.
