And things were...okay. You avoided the lair, but still hung out with the turtles while they were topside. Summer faded into fall, and your friend Casey took up vigilante-ing. Donnie made breakthroughs in the retro-mutagen. Fall became winter. Mikey told you about his new ice cream cat, and brought her to visit your apartment in a cooler box. Raph came to the fire escape to throw rocks with you when he was angry, and you showed him how to do digital art while he taught you how to spray paint.
And as for Leo...things were awkward. But you took your break. You missed him. A lot!
But...yeah, you felt undeniably better.
Well. Except for when you didn't. Except for when you longed for those nights of leaning against him as you watched movies. Of laughing and freaking out over Space Heroes. Of crushing on Captain Ryan together.
It was all okay. Except for when you pictured the look on his face when you said 'no', the shattered look in his eyes, the way he looked at you...as though you'd kicked him in the face without an ounce of guilt...
Or when you remembered the look on his face the first time you held his hand, platonically. He'd blushed a lot and you'd mentally explained it away by thinking 'it's cold out'. (He'd looked so adorably embarrassed you'd apologized, which he responded to by squeezing your hand a bit tighter.)
Not that it mattered, because he was gone now. He stayed in the lair and you stayed in your apartment. Everything was perfectly okay.
Now you were walking with April and her friend Irma as they talked about who-knows-what, not really paying attention to their conversation...
"Footbots!" April exclaimed. You whipped your head up from your phone to see a circle of footbots around you.
You dropped your phone.
"Shit." You said softly, looking for a way out. You were definitely paying attention now.
"These aren't the types of friends I meant!" Irma squeaked.
"Move, Irma! Run!" April yelled, shoving her forwards and through the circle.
"Ya don't have to tell me twice!" You yelped, turning tail and running after them. The scratchy mechanical sound of the bots racing after you grated against your brain as they followed far too fast-
"No!" April groaned as a Footbot hit her phone with a ninja star. Shit-
"Who are these freaks, guys?!" Irma said.
"Y'know, at the moment, who gives a fuck?!" You yelled back shrilly, feeling your sides start to ache from the sudden running.
"Doesn't matter! Run!" April added, heaving a breath.
You reached the manhole by your apartment in a daze, ignoring Irma as she said something along the lines of 'ew sewers' probably, and slid down the ladder as fast as you could for the first time in months.
"C'mon nerds! Close the cover behind you!" You yelled up, and they both followed you down, albeit with a bit of complaining from Irma. You liked the girl, really, but honestly you could not care less about her sinuses right now.
"Man it's weird being back here..." You muttered, crossing your arms over your chest protectively.
"Ooh...right, you haven't been here since Leo-"
"Zip it O'Neil." You said bluntly, but immediately felt guilty as she recoiled. "Uh...sorry. That was mean. I just...It'll be weird seeing him again is all."
"Who?" Said Irma unhelpfully.
"An old friend." You said, just as unhelpfully, running ahead of Irma and April and reaching the turnstiles in a haze.
