After Carnivore broke up, Peter worked for  the New York Parks Department and he loved it. He loved his home life, and caring  for his cats. When Type O Negative became a big thing, the band wanted to tour, but Peter didn't want to. Touring meant Peter had to quit his job, and he refused to do so. Drummer Sal Abruscato ended up quitting the band because of Peter being uncooperative. Peter eventually quit his job for the band. After that, his life began to go downhill. His failed relationships were getting to him, along with suffering mental illness, and addiction. On top of all that, his father passed away. He was devastated. He didn't go to the funeral, and he waited four years to visit his grave. One of the only things that made him happy in Type O was he could use his favorite color, which was green. He would spend hours looking through different shades of green until he would find the one he liked the most. But, his problems were getting worse and worse. Most of the songs on the album "World Coming Down" were about these problems. During this era, he had become addicted to drugs and alcohol. He then Stopped taking his medication, which made him even worse. Peter later found out that his family was still being billed for all his father's treatments, which ended up being useless. On December 24, he was forcefully put into a rehab center for his substance abuse. Then, at the height of this all, he found out his longtime girlfriend was cheating on him. He assaulted her new boyfriend and ended up spending a month at New York City's main prison complex, Rikers Island. Peter Steele had spent years struggling with mental illness and coping with the aftermath of his fathers death and tumultuous relationships with drugs and alcohol, but after the band's final 2009 tour it seemed like things were looking up for him. He seemed to be doing better than in his other years. He was sober, seemed excited to make more music, and was hopeful about the future. One of his beloved cats, Tito, was very sick. His band mates were concerned that he might relapse. They attempted to get in touch with him, but were only able to talk to his girlfriend who told them that he was sick with the flu. Then, suddenly he was gone.
