Harry wondered if hiring Daphne was a smart idea, he wondered if he should’ve hired two of her because Saturday morning he found twelve people waiting at his door when he opened for the day. Daphne just laughed, her smile reaching her ears as Harry looked at her in surprise.
Daphne came around to the front as she saw each of the recipients of her cupcakes file into the bakery and ask questions. Mrs. Potts was there too, her kind eyes fell on Daphne and the pair shared a wink before Daphne went about making sure each of the customers were treated with care.
It was like a bomb gone off, but it wasn’t the kind that would destroy countries or cause wars. It was the kind of bomb that the world needed more of. It was quiet and simple, it was the kind of explosion that happened inside of you when you were touched with something so sweet and so pure that you couldn’t help but share that kind of experience with others. Daphne’s sweets reached deep down into your soul and pulled out the most innocent part of you.
Harry watched with adoring eyes as Daphne danced around the glass case, pulling out each of the treats she had put her signature touch on. He couldn’t help but smile as Daphne had a short talk with each of the customers. She listened to their stories and how the cupcake helped them. Daphne was a natural, her smile was sincere and she listened to each person as if their story was the one that dug at her the most. She was so aware of their needs, so attentive.
“She’s special,” Mrs. Potts said as she moved towards the back corner where Harry stood.
“I know she is,” Harry said as he reached down to hug the older woman.
Mrs. Potts gently wrapped her arms around Harry and when he pulled back she placed her wrinkled hands on his young cheeks, giving them a pat.
“She’s going to help this place, Harry. You need to protect her.” Mrs. Potts said quietly.
“Protect her?” Harry asked, confused by the old woman’s advice. “From what? From who? Have you looked at her?” Harry and Mrs. Potts laid their eyes on the auburn pixie whose smile was as pure as the sugar she used in her sweets. “Who would want to hurt someone like her?”
“People don’t like change, Harold. People do crazy things when they’re scared. Just make sure you protect that little darling. We need her more than we know.” Mrs. Potts finished giving his cheek a soft pinch before leaving him to take her place at the counter, asking for her usual mix of pastries and bread.
Harry rested his back against the wall of the bakery, watching as Daphne’s body leaned over the counter to kiss Mrs. Potts cheek before the woman scurried off with her treats for the weekend. Before the next person was helped Daphne looked over at Harry, her body still leaning over the counter to see his tall form and she wiggled her delicate fingers at him.
Harry couldn’t help but laugh softly, his own long fingers wiggled back at her before he moved around the counter and decided it was time to stop admiring her and start helping her again. He couldn’t help but eavesdrop on the conversation that Daphne was having with Evan Saunders, one of the people they had left a cupcake for the night before.
“I gave up on trying to find Rocky,” Evan said quietly as he looked at Daphne in that same adoring stare Harry had just been wearing.
“You should adopt another dog, Evan. It has been a few weeks now and just think,” Daphne’s hand reached out to touch Evan’s hands as they rested on the counter. “If Rocky comes home he’ll have another friend. Wouldn’t that just be the nicest surprise?”
Evan’s lips curled up into a smile and he nodded. “Thanks Daphne, maybe I’ll go look today.”
“You should and when you find that perfect pup bring him down. I have a couple recipes for dog biscuits that I am sure the new puppy would love.” Daphne squeezed his hand before she quickly handed him a bag of sweets that Harry had filled for her.
