the next few hours were spent in awkward silence, neither of them quite sure of what to do until y/n suddenly remembered, "oh goodness, i'm so selfish! you got burned, and you carried me all the way up here and helped me and i forgot all about it! come here, let me help you now, gosh i'm sorry..." she said worriedly, sitting up straighter on the bed and patting the spot next to her for him to sit down. he raised an eyebrow "i'm the doctor here, i don't need your help. and you're anything but selfish, do you even hear yourself? you're smart, i don't know how you can't see that, and i carried you here because you are useful to me y/n. don't overthink it."
she sighed, "i know, i know, you don't care about me or anyone else and blah blah blah, but if you're such a good doctor how come you haven't treated your own wounds yet? that's right, because you can't bandage your own torso and back by yourself. now stop being stubborn and sit down, i want to help you, and even though i'm sure you'd find a way to treat yourself it'd be a lot easier if you just let me." chishiya just stood there for a moment, seemingly weighing his options, and then grabbed the first aid kit again. he sat down beside her and unbuttoned his shirt, revealing nasty looking burns that peppered his chest, stomach, and back, "hurry up then, it's cold in here."
"gosh chi, these look painful," she said, gently cleaning them with water and wiping all the blood and muck away. "i suppose so. don't concern yourself over it though, i know how you worry," he said, staring off into space. "how am i supposed to 'not concern myself over it'? you literally set yourself on fire." she said incredulously, and he sighed, "i told you not to overthink it. these aren't life threatening, you're the one who could have died.". she stopped what she was doing and looked up at him, "why do you keep turning the conversation back to me?". he seemed surprised by this question and had to think about his answer for a little while, but eventually he spoke, "i don't know. why does it matter?" "because i want to know you chishiya! i know it's selfish, but don't i deserve to know the person i've trusted with my life throughout all of these games? i don't mind telling you about myself, and i'm beyond grateful to you for saving my life, but now i want to help you. i want to be there for you. it would give me something to fight for."
he just sat there for a while before reluctantly looking down at her, "fine, i suppose there's some logic in that. in order to work well together we have to understand each other, and if trying to help me makes you perform better in games then i'll let you. there isn't much to know about me though, you know almost all of it already. i'm a medical student and a diamonds player. the only thing that's left is my name, my full name is shuntaro chishiya. now it's your turn, i need to know you too.". he said all of this without fluctuating from his usual flat tone, and still she couldn't help but smile, "shuntaro...like taro...i like it! taro's one of my favorite flavors you know, but i think i'll stick to calling you chi or chishiya to avoid confusing people. i guess there's not much to know about me either, except that i'm a diamonds/clubs player, i'm good with people, and i hate violence and conflict. a major flaw of mine is that i don't think about how things will affect me before i act, i only think about helping other people until what i did catches up to me. today's game was a pretty clear example of that," she said sheepishly, "another weakness i have is that i want to make friends with everyone, i just automatically assume everyone is good and trustworthy until they prove otherwise! oh, and my full name is (your full name)."
he listened attentively and nodded, "good to know. we aren't alike in many ways, but that makes our team more balanced." y/n had finished bandaging his back and now moved on to his chest and stomach, noticing how he would sometimes flinch or his muscles would twitch under her fingers and apologizing for hurting him. in reality though, he couldn't care less about the pain. his focus was, inexplicably, on her touch instead. he was...nervous, if that was even the right word for it. he found it hard to focus on much else and he internally scolded himself for it, what a dumb thing to be distracted by! it was only y/n, and even though she was caring for him so gently and her hands were so soft and she looked up at him every once in a while with those eyes...no, it doesn't matter. there was no room for such trivial things in a world like this.
"mk, that should work just fine! does it feel ok?" y/n asked after she finished bandaging him up, backing up to see if she'd gotten everything. he nodded, looking down at himself, "yes, this is good. you're actually decent at this, have you considered going into medicine too?" she handed him his shirt, "actually i was considering it for a while, but i don't think i could handle seeing people suffer all the time. ironic considering our current situation, but as much as i wanted to help people i know my emotions would get in the way. humanitarian aid is a much better fit for me, so that's what i do!" she said with a small smile. "you do humanitarian work? you're very predictable aren't you" he said, lightheartedness creeping into his voice as he put his shirt back on. "maybe," she laughed, pain momentarily forgotten.
the rest of the night was spent in almost complete silence as they sat in chishiya's room, y/n wasn't recovered enough to go anywhere and chishiya refused to leave either. "you can go if you want to you know! i'm sure you'd much rather be out there spying on people or something, i'm not gonna ransack your room if you leave me alone in here," she said jokingly, and he shrugged, "i know. that's not what i'm worried about." she looked surprised, "oh?", and he looked over at her from his seat on the other bed, changing the topic "let me see the wound again." she sighed but obliged, unzipping her hoodie and looking down at the bandages. chishiya got up and sat on the edge of her bed again, looking at it, "hm...looks ok. there's a little bit of blood soaking through here but it should be fine." he leaned closer and touched the bloodstain, causing her to inhale sharply. he looked up at her, "that hurts?", and she hit his arm without force, "well of course it hurts, i got stabbed!"
he stayed quiet after that, straightening again as she zipped her hoodie back up. he didn't go back to his own bed though, just sitting there on hers and staring off into space as he usually does when there's no one to watch. "...you ok?", y/n asked hesitantly, and he still didn't move, "yes." she sighed, groaning as she sat up and went to sit next to him. he just watched with mild interest as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed so she was sitting next to him, taking a second to catch her breath. she nudged his arm gently, "hey. what's wrong?". he looked at her with an unreadable expression on his face, "why do you ask? do i look upset?". she met his eyes, "no. but i know you, i can tell when something's bothering you. you don't have to act all emotionless, it's just me! no need to act cool or whatever, i already know you are." "you're not going to give it up until i give you an answer are you," he said, and she smiled, "nope!". he fixed his gaze back on the wall and spoke quietly, his voice still monotonous as ever, "i don't want you to get hurt. i already left you alone once, i'm not going to to it again."
this wasn't the answer she'd been expecting, she just sat there in stunned silence for a few moments before speaking softly, "i...what? chishiya...i don't blame you for what happened with niragi, you know that don't you?" he just kept staring at the wall, "whether or not you blame me isn't important." she didn't know what to say, so she just scooted a little closer to him and placed a gentle hand on his arm, "...it's ok." he seemed surprised by this, and looked down at her, "it's ok?". she nodded slightly, "if it were anyone else in your place i'd think 'wow, he cares about me huh', but as hard as i try i can never figure out what's going on in your mind. i don't know why you're upset, but i know that you are even if you don't want me to know, you know? i just wanted you to know that it's ok, whatever it is. you're smart, i'm sure you don't think you need anyone to tell you that it's gonna be ok, but even so i think it's still nice to hear sometimes, don't you?"
he just looked at her for a moment after that, not saying anything, but not moving away from her either. "in that case," he said after a minute, meeting her eyes, "it's ok." she smiled slightly, heart aglow at his small gesture of caring, "yeah...it's ok. as long as you're ok, it's ok."
