the logical voice inside chishiya's head told him to give up, that it was too late and this was just another death like so many he'd seen before, but something in him wouldn't let him leave her. he found himself starting to get desperate, almost panicked, but before he had time to decipher why that was he felt her pulse growing stronger. her eyes began to flutter and her hands twitched as if reaching for something, "chi...shiya...?" he looked down quickly and saw her eyes start to open, overcome with relief. "yes...yes i'm here. you're ok. i'm here," he said, brushing a strand of hair out of her face. "mmh...", she shakily raised an arm, reaching up for him, and he lifted her gently to lean against his chest. "it's ok, i'm not leaving. i'm not going to leave you here," he said quietly, and she nodded with a small "hmm". chishiya couldn't remember the last time he'd held someone, in fact he wasn't sure if he ever had at all, but this wasn't nearly as repulsive as he thought it would be. somehow he found himself wanting to pull her closer now that she was in his arms, but he knew there wasn't time to dwell on emotions now.
"can you walk?", he asked, and she nodded slightly, "mhm." he wasn't convinced, but he helped her up anyway and told her to hold onto him for support. she wasn't quite tall enough to put her arm over his shoulders to walk so he put his arm around her waist instead, keeping steady pressure on her wound to slow the bloodflow. slowly she regained some strength and stability, leaning less against him, and he looked down at her, "it's working?" "yeah, i think so. is usagi ok? kuina?", she asked worriedly, and chishiya nodded, "yes, they're both fine. don't stress yourself out, it's not good for healing. how are you feeling anyway? how's the pain? any lightheadedness or numbness?" she looked up at him, "i don't know, i mean yes it hurts pretty badly...and i do feel kind of faint, but hey were you a doctor in the original world? you sound like a doctor right now." he sighed, "i was a medical student, yes. now don't look at me, focus on walking. falling would only worsen your condition." she obliged, but smiled slightly, "i know you wouldn't let me fall."
chishiya felt an unfamiliar rush of heat rise to his face, speechless for a second before regaining his composure, "i wouldn't be a very good doctor otherwise, would i?". they slowly approached the flight of stairs that led to their rooms and he turned to her again, "going up stairs will only agitate your wound." "well i don't have much of a choice do i? how else can we get to my room?" she asked, letting go of him and holding on to the handrail instead before he could stop her. he found himself missing her warmth but was quickly distracted by her attempting to go up the steps. she climbed slowly and with effort, clinging to the railing and out of breath from just one step. she tried to do another but swayed, visibly dizzy and threatening to fall. "y/n, stop," chishiya said, quickly going to her side and steadying her, "you'll hurt yourself." she leaned into him, letting her head fall onto his shoulder until the dizziness subsided, "this is stupid...they're just stairs!". chishiya looked at her, "yes, but you can't do them on your own." "well then what am i supposed to do-..!", she was cut off by arms around her shoulders and under her knees, and before she could react she was being lifted into chishiya's arms. "this is the safest solution," he said, and in her shock it took her a few seconds to respond, "um- but what if you drop me..? am i too heavy?". he looked ahead dismissively, already beginning to climb the stairs, "well, you know i wouldn't let you fall."
once they reached the top of the stairs he didn't put her down, continuing to carry her down the hallway despite her protests, "i'm fine to walk you know!" "the more you change positions, the longer it'll take to heal," he said, and she frowned, "but i don't want you to have to carry me that far, my room's still a ways away!" "mine isn't," he said, "and i have medical supplies there, it's safer." surprised, she nodded slightly, "ok, don't go to too much trouble though." a minute later they were there, and chishiya set her down on the spare bed, "stay there, i'm going to get bandages." he left before she could reply and came back a minute later with a first aid kit, sitting down beside her on the bed. "take off your jacket," he said, and reluctantly she did, exposing her swimsuit top and the wound in her side. he poured some water onto a rag and began to clean it, his touch surprisingly gentle as he wiped the blood away, "it hasn't hit any organs, you're lucky." she nodded, "thanks chi. for, you know, helping me. you didn't have to." he took out a roll of gauze, ripping off a strip and folding it to fit over the cut, "well i don't want you to die. and you've helped me before without question, i'm just returning the favor." "of course i did, you're my friend. i don't care whether or not you think of me as a friend, i care about you and you'll always be mine. my friend, that is," she said quietly. he nodded, "if that's what you want to think i'm not going to stop you." he took an elastic bandage out of the kit and began wrapping it around her waist to secure the gauze, trying to keep his heartbeat regulated as his arms passed around her and his face got closer to her torso. "aw this is like a hug," she joked, "being hugged by chishiya definitely isn't on my list of most likely scenarios!" he looked up at her, "i didn't intend to let you get stabbed either but here we are." she rolled her eyes, "you didn't let me get stabbed, idiot, i did it on purpose! you're a much more important member of the team than i am, it made the most sense. plus i couldn't just stand by and watch him hurt you!"
he tied off the bandage and straightened, looking straight ahead as he usually did, "yes you could." she slipped her hoodie back on, "could what? let him stab you? no, i'm not heartless." "you should be," he said, "forming bonds with people is only a weakness for others to exploit." she sighed, "oh drop the act chishiya, i know you're not heartless either. even if you only helped me to pay off some moral debt, you still had the morals to form it! you can't survive all on your own, nobody can. emotions aren't a weakness, they're what make us human."
he took a moment to respond, thinking carefully about his next words, "you're right. i'm not heartless. life would be a hell of a lot easier if i was." she looked away, "i know. but life isn't about being easy, it's about being fulfilling. i know you're of the mindset that everyone is born to die, but think of it this way: does a book begin just to end? do flowers bloom just to wither? does love steal two hearts just to break them? no, the book has a story to tell, the flowers make the landscape beautiful, and love...well, i think love captures hearts and intertwines them. even if it ends in heartbreak, love reminds us what it means to live. even if life does inevitably end, i think it's about enjoying it while we're here. do you agree?" he thought for a while before looking back at her, "...i suppose i do. still, there's no time for any of that. survival is what matters most, humanity is a luxury here."
