Chapter 17
Just Like Hangman
Everything was going well and smoothly for Gemina in the compound. It has been a day ever since she was brought in and Sarah has been extremely generous with taking care of her. She was very grateful for the hospitality and care that the Newlins have been treating her but it was also suffocating- it somehow felt like a guise for them to be able to keep an eye for her. Gemina was under strict surveillance- everywhere she went, she was escorted from her room towards where she was told to go.
Training with Jason went well but he was being too gentle that she suspects that Sarah was uncomfortable by it. Smells like jealousy. It was extremely uncomfortable training with Jason when Sarah and Steve's eyes were on them the whole time. They were laughing and smiling like idiots during tier sparring match, with Jason joking around trying his hardest to make her break. The two probably felt that they were being too comfortable with each other that they made it a point to separate the two.
Gemina hasn't seen Jason anywhere ever since- making her feel so lost and alone. If she only knew that she wouldn't be able to talk to him regularly, she would've taken advantage of their time together during training. Nobody liked her here, they felt uneasy about the VIP treatment she was getting from Sarah Newlin. People were scared to talk to her as though one wrong word or move from them will put them in a bad light. She has told Sarah that she wanted to sleep where everybody slept in so that she would be able to fit in better but Sarah insisted on letting her sleep on it first.
It was 6 o'clock in the morning and the sun was shining down on two familiar figures holding beams of wood. It was Jason and Luke. She couldn't help but frown seeing them be that close without them throwing hands. Jason was quick to tell her all about Luke and all the fights that they had. It was clear that Jason was the golden boy and Sarah and Steve weren't shy with reminding the other soldiers that which just put Jason in a very tight spot.
She has only managed to overhear bits and pieces here and there about an upcoming colossal event. She could've had more information had people not been avoiding her as much as they have. It was like she had the plague! Granted, people would smile at her and speak to her when she makes the first move, but they were very careful with their answers if they weren't rushing to get away. Gemina quickly got ready before running out of her room, shooting straight for the two.
Luke was the first to notice her, "Good morning Miss Gemina!" he beamed, nodding at her. He could be nice and charming when he wanted to. Gemina smiled back and waved, "Good morning Luke, good morning Jason." she greeted, nodding at Jason. Jason greeted her back enthusiastically and awkwardly put his hand up for a high five once he realised that he was reaching out for a hug. Snorting a laugh, she reciprocated his high five before nodding towards the beam in question.
"What are you guys up to?" she asked, running her fingers on the beam that they were currently working on. She was working double time, having failed to progress as much as she wanted to in the past few days. Well, she knew most of where the soldiers slept, went to train, went to eat, went to survey and yada yada yada. She knew most of what they needed about Sarah and Steve Newlin- Sarah is a pretty talkative girl.
