Nico is a close friend of Ellie's and was there when Ellie got bitten. Nico was lucky enough not to get bitten but had to be the one to kill Riley. Nico swore from that day on she would protect Ellie no matter what the cost.

Nico sacrifices her life to save Ellie from David. As she was dying she handed Ellie her luck bracelets and told her to keep them. Ellie now wears Nico's blood covered bracelets in memory of her sacrifice for her.
