I couldn't belive it.
Xavier? Of all people? Ugh!
I had to admit, I was jealous, jealous of Xavier Thorpe.
"Are you okay, Enid?" Wednesday asked me. When I didn't answer, she said: "Are you jealous?"
"Of course not," I told her.
Of course I am, I wanted to say. you should be mine and mine only.
Of course, no one gets what they want, and I saw absolutely no future between her and I.
I didn't really want Wednesday as a lover, I realized. I just wanted love from her. As a friend.
Not long after, we ran into Bianca, Ajax, Divina, and Xavier, and they thought it would be fun to go for coffee. I exchanged looks with Wednesday.
"Sure," she said.
And so we went. I was babbling off to Ajax about how wonderful Valentines Day is and he showed the same interest by not just saying: "Cool", "I don't care", and "I guess" like Wednesday did. Instead, he went into full-length essays worth of words and just made me feel special.

LATER IN THE DAY

"Wednesday.
My one and my only.
I love you."
Ajax busted out laughing. "Nah, man, nah. You can't tell her it like THAT."
I was rehearsing for something that would change my life forever.
"Okay, okay," I said. "When I first saw you, I looked into your eyes. They had to be the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I would never want to walk the earth with anyone else. I'm a puzzle piece, one piece missing. You're that piece. My life isn't complete without you. Was that good?" I asked.
Ajax nodded. "Tell her exactly that, and you got yourself a girlfriend. A sociopath of one, but a girlfriend is a girlfriend."
