A wave of disbelief and fear colder than ice swept through my insides.
"Missing? As in, like, gone?" I choke out, mind reeling.
"Gone...my dear Sophie...gone." she says, looking at me with eyes glazed with tears, drowning in heartbreak.
"But...how?"
"I-I don't know...she just never came home..."
"N-never came home?" Was all I managed to say as I succumbed to my tears.
Avery reached out a shaky hand to pull me into a teary hug as we both broke down, mourning Sophie, missing her bright, warm presence.

As we held each other in the doorway, the sound of tyres rolling over a road increasing in volume diverted our attention to the road.
(Sorry if this is super inaccurate, idk how this works, if u know pls correct me 🙃, this is just based off of the ime i had to get an ambulance to come to my house) It pulled over and two officers stepped out, catching sight of us and walking over. One of them, a woman with short black hair and beady eyes, said, in a crisp and formal tone "We've come to ask some questions about the dissapearance of Sophie Hammond."
"Of course, come right in..." mumbled Avery, her voice shaking as she stood aside to let them in.
We went over to the living room, and the second she sat down, the brown-haired man she had arrived with flashed us a sympathetic smile, pulled out a notebook and a pen, then looked expectantly at the dark-eyed woman.
"So, when did you last see her?"
"About 4:15 w-when we were walking home. I didn't hear or see anything weird." My hands were still trembling, I still simply couldn't believe Sophie was gone.
"Was she behaving oddly or suspicously prior to her dissapearance?"
Finally, Avery spoke up, her voice just as weak and shaky as mine.
"Sometimes she would come home late looking really scared, always with some excuse that I never really believed, but I didn't think much of it, but now it's too late..."

The scratching sound of the other officer making notes stopped as he raised his head to look sympathetically at Avery.

"It's not your fault. We can't promise you Sophie will be okay, but we can promise you we will try our hardest to bring her home safely."

A memory came to mind. A few months ago, I was at Sophie's house. A letter went through the letter flap, Sophie had taken one look at it, then thrown it out, looking terrified.

I relayed this event to the officers while desperately trying to not start crying. I focused on the sound of the pen moving accross the page to try and calm myself down. After that, it was just a blur of sounds and answering questions.

Timeskip bc im lazy :)
I arrived home, my thoughts a distorted, numb mess. Sophie was gone. Gone. And nobody knew where she was.
"I can't face school tomorrow. Not ever. Not without Sophie."
