"Thank you, Max."
I started to clamber out of the car while the gentle giant held open the door.
In the short day that I had had, I had been driven to Mr Jameson's compound in Hertfordshire, been on a tour of the business wing where I was stared at like a circus animal and shown the offices where I would spend most of my time. My tour guide, Max, explained the goings on of the compound and how Eric liked things to be run before the man himself arrived to take over the tour.
I had to admit I was a little upset that my new employer had shown up. I had every intention to make a good impression, but with him around, nothing he said was filtering through to my brain.
At least with Max explaining everything, I wasn't thinking about the stunning man I now called boss and all the nasty things I could possibly do with him.
But I tried my best to focus and listen. I did. I wasn't certain that I succeeded, but I tried.
"You're very welcome, Miss Stone. I will see you in the morning for your physical training session."
I groaned.
I had almost forgotten about the gym session that I was going to have to attend.
The bodyguard laughed.
"It sucks, I know, Miss Stone. But Mr Jameson hasn't added it to your contract to alter your appearance. We work hard, and you'll need some serious stamina to keep up with him."
I cocked my brow at the man holding the door open.
"He works the hardest out of all of us. You should be prepared for some late nights."
"So long as you promise that you go home without me on those nights, Max."
The bodyguard cocked his brow at me as if he wanted to disagree.
"He certainly picked the right woman."
I smiled, shrugging my shoulders.
"I think that will remain to be seen."
Max simply shook his head, closing the door behind me.
"I'll see you in the morning, Miss Arana."
"See you tomorrow, Max."
I simply watched as the bodyguard, my bodyguard, returned to his seat and drove off down the dull alley of Lambeth.
It was certainly a car that didn't fit into the back alleys that I lived down, so I felt sure it was going to raise some suspicions. Perhaps even rumours in my black market circles that I had started selling my body to make ends meet.
It wouldn't bother me, whatever they wanted to say about me was fine.
But the reaction Mark would have if he found out the circles we both ran in thought his woman was servicing other men.
That was what made my blood run cold.
I had trouble staying out of the line of his fists as it was. I didn't need to add fuel to the fire.
Perhaps I could ask Max to drop me at the tube station and let me walk.
I snorted at the thought the moment it popped into my head.
I may not have known Eric very well, but I felt pretty sure that that idea would be kiboshed the moment I tried to bring it up. And I certainly didn't want anyone to know what happened at home, behind my closed doors.
I sighed.
I could only surmise that I was going to have to choose which man was the lesser of two evils.
