My mind was adrift in sea of peace, calm, and void. Only for an alarm noise to erupt like a bolt of lightning, bring disruption to this moment of rest. I groggily shuffle beneath my bedsheets, my arm looking blindly for the clock resting on a nearby end table. At last, my hand came upon a squared object that was making the accursed noise that shattered my realm of peace. I pressed the alarm button and began to get up with a drowsy yawn. I proceeded to go through the same routine I had become accustomed to for the past three years of college. Get up, eat, dress, drive, and shut up in order to take notes for the following lecture. While it was definitely mundane, it was the best way to prepare myself for the onslaught of information that would bombard my consciousness in due time.
I proceeded to eat a quick breakfast of slightly stale Cheerios before going to get dressed in sweater and sweatpants. Sure, it wasn't the most professional outfit I could wear, but it was comfortable enough to not give a damn about other people's fashion opinion. I grabbed my wallet, car keys, and my computer bag before I walked out into the slight breeze of cool August air. I took a deep breathe, relishing the fresh air filling my lungs before I let out a sigh of contented happiness. With my hair flowing like water in a freshwater stream, I proceeded down the flight of stairs to the parking lot where my 2014 Civic was awaiting me like always. I got in, started the car, then proceeded to take the normal drive to the college campus that was slightly over 10 kilometers away. While driving, I listened to an audiobook that describe fictious worlds that could be places of liberating freedom, petrifying terror, heartwarming romance, etcetera, etcetera. While listening a thought manifested like a disembodied light in a cavernous room of inky darkness. 'What would it be like in that world? Who would I be? How would I conduct myself in a world such as that?'
But before my imagination could begin constructing silly scenarios about worlds beyond my reach; I arrived at the college's biology center. I got out and began a casual stroll towards the two-story building, locking my car that beeped its conformation. I went into the same classroom has I did every other weekday, sitting my backside down on the same chair in the same row. The other students arrived, and the professor appeared not too long after. From there, my day progressed as normally as one could imagine. First class was Genetics at 10:00 a.m., second was Bioengineering at 11:30 a.m., lunch at 1:00 p.m., and period of free time that lasted until the final class revolving around Human Anatomy at 5:00 p.m. By the time that class had ended, the sky was turning orange with pink clouds surrounding a descending sun that would arise like phoenix the following morning. I checked my calendar on my iPhone: August 18th, Friday, 7:18 p.m. I felt my body loosen like a snake uncoiling from a particularly uncomfortable position. Friday...How could I forget? I needed to get ready for tomorrow and do a once over the strategy my friends and I have prepared for the upcoming Dnd battle against the crazed enchantress of the Mechanical Maze.
I got into my vehicle and began driving to my apartment on the other side of town. The audiobook began to tell its tales of magic once again and the same thought I had earlier arisen like smoke from a blazing fire. 'What would it be like in that world? Who would I be? How would I conduct myself in a world such as that?' I closed my eyes for the tiniest fraction of a second while proceeding through a green light to indulge myself in this simple tantalizing thought. However, the sound of a horn pierced my mental illusions and light covered the left side of my body. I turned and saw bright lights, the grill of a semi-truck, and then...I awoke. Flailing wildly like a fish out of water, I fell out of bed and gave the unfamiliar tiled floor a kiss with my entire face.
