Bruce Yamada pov:

"That was a lovely poem, Bruce!" The teacher clapped. I smiled and walked back to my seat. I sat down and looked at the front of the classroom. "Vance, would you like to go next?" "No." "Why not?" "Because." "Oh, okay."

The bell rung. I got up and packed my stuff into my bag. "Bruce, you are very talented at writing. How about you join my literature club?" "Thanks miss, but it's alright. I haven't got time for it." "Okay, I'll see you tomorrow." I waved and walked out of the classroom.

My last class was next. I checked to see what it was, maths. I didnt like maths. The lesson felt like it took years to go by.

I walked inside. "Bruce, you are two minutes late." "I'm sorry, Miss Avery made me stay behind." "Detention." "Are you serious? Ive got baseball practice, I can't go." "That's not my problem." "Fine." I walked to my seat and sat down. I chucked my bag on the floor. "If you have an attitude like that then you can leave now." The teacher stared at me. "I don't have an attitude. I'm putting my bag down." He shook his head and began teaching the lesson.

I wrote down some notes in my book. I would use them to study for our maths test which was coming up soon. I think next month? I couldn't afford a bad grade. What's the point in coming to class if you don't learn anything anyway? Ask Vance Hopper.

I stared at my paper and read through all my notes. I didnt acknowledge anything around me until someone tapped my shoulder. I looked up and saw Vance Hopper standing in front of me. "Class is over now. I just wanted to let you know before sir shouted at you." "Oh, thanks." I smiled before packing up my stuff and shoving it in my bag. Vance nodded and walked off.

I was about to leave school until a teacher pulled me aside. "Where do you think you're going?" "..home?" "You've got detention." "Shoot. I forgot about it. Sorry, I'm going now." I turned back around and made my way to the hall where detention was held.

I groaned. I didn't want to be there. It would give me 5 minutes to get home before I had to leave for baseball practice. I'd just have to ride really quickly back home.

I walked into the hall. "Bruce! What brings you here?" The teacher was standing at the front of the room with a clipboard in his hands. "What do you think?" Some people around me laughed, for whatever reason I don't know. "There's no need to be rude." "That's not what I meant-" "Just sit down." "Mk." I sat down. Why couldn't they day be over already?

"Bruce think fast!" "Huh?" I turned to look beside me but the boy had already thrown a ball at me. I moved out the way just before it hit me. It flew past me and right into the chest of the person next to me. "Shit, Vance im so sorry-" The teacher shouted, "Quit the talking!"

Vance stood up. "You piece of shit!" He stormed towards my friend who had thrown the ball and hit him right in the middle of his face. Jeez. I was glad it wasnt me. My friend fell on to the floor. Vance got on his knees next to him and grabbed his neck. My friend punched Vance in the stomach but Vance didn't let go. "Everyone else get out. Detention is over. YOU TWO STOP FIGHTING." He ran over to the two and tried to break them up. I didn't waste no time. I was up and out of there quicker than you could say run. I had baseball practice to be at.

I got off my bike and locked it up next to my house.

I walked inside and was just about to walk upstairs when my father called me. "The school called, why did you have detention?" "I was two minutes late to class because Miss Avery held me back to talk to me about English." "Okay, I'll drive you to baseball practice in 10 minutes." "Alright." I ran upstairs and into my room.

I grabbed my clothes, my shoes, my bat and my hat, and shoved it into my duffle bag. I left my room and jogged down the stairs. "You ready?" "Yes dad." "Okay." We left the house and got into the car.

The car journey was kind of short. It felt like it at least.

I got out of the car and looked at my dad. "Aren't you watching?" "No. I got stuff to do." "But you said for the past two weeks that you were gonna come and you haven't. It's been 7 practices." "It's nothing special, it's just practice." "It's the principle of it, dad." "It's. Just. Practice. I'll come when you have a game, don't worry." "Okay." I walked to the changing rooms.

I got inside an empty cubicle and changed. I put my hat on and grabbed my bat. I was early, go me.

I walked on to the pitch. "Bruce, I want you batting." "Yes coach." I walked to the batter box and stood, ready for one of my team mates to through the ball. I hit it im the first try. Despite being distracted due to my tiredness, I was playing pretty well.

"Well done today Bruce." "Thanks coach." I smiled and walked inside the changing rooms. "Look who it is, pro baseball player!" "Thanks Bobby, you aren't too bad yourself." "Thank you." I walked to my bag of clothes and began changing again.

I waited in the parking lot for my dad to pick me up. He pulled up, 5 minutes late. "I'm sorry I was late Bruce, I got caught up in work." "All good dad." I smiled slightly before getting back into the car.

"So how was practice?" My dad looked at me through the rear view mirror. "It was fine, same as always I guess." "That's good. Your mother is cooking some noodles and Amy is at Gwen's house." "Good luck to her, I heard her father was an alcoholic." "Bruce, don't speak about other families." "Sorry dad."

We pulled up to my house. "You run in, I have to collect a package from our neighbours." "'Kay." I got out the car and walked into my house. "Bruce, my baby boy! How was practice?" My mum walked towards me and opened her arms. I hugged her, she kissed my head. "It was fine, ma." "That's good! I made some noodles for you, they are on the table." "Thank you." I walked upstairs to change.

I sat at the table and ate my noodles. "Honey, the package isn't there." "Oh. It's okay, it was only cheap so I'll order another one." "Another what?" I looked at my mum. "A present for your auntie." "Oh yeah." I turned back around and carried on eating.

"I'm gonna go up to bed now. Bye mum, bye dad." "Bye Brucey!" "Sleep tight Bruce." I smiled, walking upstairs for the last time today.

I got in my bed and closed my eyes. I had a science exam tomorrow and I couldn't fail. I studied all night last night. I fell asleep.

My mum walked into my room and shook me. "Get up, it's school." "Mk." She left my room. I yawned and got up. I walked to my wardrobe and picked out some clothes.

I locked my bike up in the bike shed at school and walked to the entrance. Someone pulled me aside. What's with me and getting pulled aside? "Hi." I looked to see who it was.

"Hello.. Vance. You got a nasty bruise on your neck, was that from yesterday?" "No- not the point. I know how good you are in science and I was wondering if you could help me revise over a few stuff at lunch. It's before our test." "Yeah, sure. We've got the same class before that so we can walk down together." "Thanks a lot." He slightly smiled and walked away. I stared at him. "That was odd."
