Vance Hopper pov:

I walked away from Bruce. I needed this revision if I was going to pass and I could do with spending time with somebody at lunch. Beats smoking behind the school.

It was the middle of maths. The last period before lunch. Time was going by slowly. It felt like every minute was an hour. I leaned back in my seat and stretched. "Hopper, sit up." "No." I put my feet on the table. "3-" "Don't count like I'm some fucking five year old." "Please watch your language." I narrowed my eyes at the teacher. "Fine. Don't sit like that in any of my other lessons though."

The truth was the teacher was scared of me. I don't blame him. I stabbed him with a pencil before. Not like.. bad.. but on the arm. The led got stuck in his skin and I got sent home. The police showed up to my house but let me off with a warning. The police never did anything.

I was carving my name into the table when someone stuck their hand in my hair. "Sorry, I can't help it. Anyway-" He took his hand out of my hair. "Revision time?" I stared up at him, my mouth open a little. I didn't like it when people put their hand in my hair but this time I didn't mind. "Yeah.. revision.." I snapped out of my hypnotised state and stood up.

"Science, right?" "That's what I said, dipshit." "Just checking." We walked into the library. "Since when was this here?" "Uh, for ages." "I've never seen it before." "That's not a surprise." He laughed. I stared at him. He stopped laughing. "So uh. Let's sit down."

I took a seat next to him. "Do I have to read all these books? Fuck this." I stood up but he pulled me back down. "Watch where you're touching." "Sorry. You don't have to read all of it. I'll mark the pages that you have to read, then I'll do a memory game. We've got an hour and a half because we got extra time on lunch to revise." I rolled my eyes. "Fine."

He marked the pages. "I'm gonna go to the cafeteria, I'll be up in a second. Just read the pages. It'll take you long and I'll be back by the time you're done." "Yeah yeah piss off." He sighed and got up. I read through the pages and acted like I knew what an atom was.

Bruce returned. He sat down next to me. "I got you something. I mean two things." He put down a water and a cookie in front of me. I looked at him. I felt bad because I didn't ask for anything and I don't have any way to pay him back. I've got money but that's pinball money. Asking me to give that away is like asking a cow to fly.

"Thanks.." "No problem. I asked the lady how much money was on your account and she said you had none." "Yeah. I don't eat lunch." "Why not?" "I just don't like to. Stop asking all these fucking question!" "Sorry."

"Is everything okay with the reading? Shoot- another question. Sorry." He covered his mouth and looked at the table. "It's fine. I'm done now." I put the book on the table. "Alright. Let me make the cards and we can start a memory game." I nodded.

I leaned back in my seat and looked up at the ceiling. "I'm finished. Finally." I sat up and looked at the cards. "Let's go over some of the questions. What's an atom?" "Uhh. I don't fucking know." "It's the smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist." "Oh. Okay." "Next one, what is an atomic number?" "A number that can explode." "The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which is characteristic of a chemical element and determines its place in the periodic table, close enough."

—————

"One last time. What's an atom?" "The smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist?" "There you go! All done." I smiled. "I'm gonna fucking smash this test." I grabbed the bottle of water and the cookie and shoved it into my pocket. "The test is in.. 2 minutes? Vance we gotta go." "It's only 2 minutes." "Yeah, across the school." "I don't care about a detention." "Fine." I looked at Bruce and then the corridor. "I appreciate you helping me revise." "Any time."

We walked into the class, 5 minutes late. Everybody looked up. "5 minutes late. That's an hour detention. You have 1 hour to complete this test, go." Bruce huffed and grabbed his test. I continued to stand at the door, looking out the window. "Vance? Test? Go." He handed me my paper.

I walked to my seat and sat down. "I ain't got a pencil." "You need a pen." ".. I ain't got one." "Fine. Come get one. No calling out next time." I stood back up and walked to the front. I grabbed his pen and walked back to my seat. I tried to write but it had run out. "You dumb shit. This pen ain't fucking working." "Get another one then." I walked back up the front. I threw the pen at him and got the other one.

I done all the questions I knew, which was most of them, and left the rest blank. "What the fuck is a sodium?" "Vance Hopper. Please just hand me your test and leave." "Why?" "You're distracting the whole class." "Is it an atomic number?" "Leave." "You're such a moody bitch." Bruce turned around to look at me, laughing. I looked back at him and laughed. "Bruce don't encourage it." "Sorry sir." I got up and gave him my test. "But is it an atom?" He shut the door on my face. Rude?

I walked around the school knowing that I wasn't going to show up to my next class. I was walking through the maths corridor when I turned the corner and some loser bumped into me. "YOU ASSHOLE. YOU GOT MY WATER ALL OVER ME." "I'm sorry. It's not my fault-" I punched him in the nose and then pushed him against a locker. "I NEED A TEACHER!" They shouted. I couldn't be fucked for another police visit so I left him.

I washed my knuckles off in the sink. That boy had a nose like a rock. I spent the rest of the last period throwing cookie crumbs at the back of peoples head. It made me chuckle.
