end of the exam

You were the fourth person to get on the island. Deciding to find a nice spot to stay instead of sitting in the open, you approached a tall tree and began scaling it. Your friends would probably be upset you were using your leg but it felt fine by now. You slid onto a thick, sturdy branch about ten metres off the ground and used some leftover bandages to strap yourself to the tree. It wasn't very sturdy but you could trust it to keep you anchored in your spot. Deciding to rest for most of the long trial and trust your friends to help you pass, you activated Zetsu and closed your eyes. Boredom overtook you quickly however and you decided to explore the island a bit. Surely it wouldn’t hurt to look around a bit. A few hours had passed by now and you untied yourself, glancing around for anything fun. You spotted movement from below and lowered yourself to look from your branch. The person you least wanted to see, out of all the contestants, left the bush. Hisoka walked calmly north and you noticed he held a few cuts from some other person, presumably from trick tower. You decided to follow him, reasoning ‘why not?’ It's not like you had anything else to do and you might discover some of his weaknesses.

You followed carefully, being extra sure not to make any noise, and soon he approached a clearing. ‘Clearings aren't the best place to be when people are hunting your tag’ you reasoned, deciding to stay in the tree line. A man lunged out of the treeline near you and charged Hisoka. He seemed close to death and was probably just trying to die with honour. Hisoka made no attempt to move and you watched curiously as the man charged, only to suddenly be struck by needles. They filled his face and drove straight through his skull, dropping him to nothing but a corpse in seconds. It was a frightening sight but you stayed on guard, knowing Hisoka not to be one to use needles as a weapon. The man named Gittarackur stepped out of the opposing treeline, holding needles firmly in his fingers.
“Sorry about that. I was careless and let him escape.” He mused aloud.
“Liar. He probably begged you to grant him one final wish, am I right?” Hisoka accused nonchalantly.
Gittarackur approached the tree Hisoka sat on at a menial pace.
“Well, I felt sorry for the guy. Given that he was dead either way.”
Hisoka smiled “You should cease pitying enemies who serve no purpose. I have standards. I'm not interested in people who have no purpose. I only spare those whose deaths would go to waste.”
The two spoke as if discussing the weather.
“Well, what about his badge?” Hisoka asked.
“Oh, I already took it. I have six points now.” answered the needle man.
“Have you been speaking with him? Strong allies are important and if you still have the leverage of that person, it could be valuable.” asked the man in his grating voice.
They said a few more things that you couldn't quite make out from your position but you feared that any movement you made would give away your spot.

The man pulled a needle from his face and you wondered how he didn't pierce himself. His hair changed to the colour of a raven's feather and he began removing the other needles from his face. You watched with a childlike fascination as he began to bubble and morph. His hair grew out to his knees, his skin turned pale, his eyes slipped into a calmer shape that seemed to lack any life, and he eventually stood complete. In the place that once stood Gittarackur, was a tall young man who looked like he would be in a shampoo commercial.
“Ah, that's much better.” The man sighed.
He crouched on the ground, hands sharpening to that of a predator, and began digging a hole. He was incredibly efficient and dropped into the ground soon after he began.
“Well, I'm going to sleep until the deadline. Best of luck.” and with those few words, he buried himself in the ground.
Hisoka stood and began walking away and you noticed someone follow after him. ‘Who would be dumb enough to follow Hisoka after what we just saw?’ you mused to yourself. Deciding that you had enough fun, for now, you did the same thing as the odd man in the ground, you anchored yourself to the tree and slept.

“The Fourth Phase of the exam has just ended. Will the applicants please return to the starting point at once?”
A loud voice over the island speakers woke you.
“You will be given one hour of extra time. If you do not return during this time, you will fail the exam.”
You stretched and popped your joints as you untethered yourself from the tree.
“Furthermore, you are not allowed to exchange tags after reaching the starting point. Anyone caught swapping tags will be disqualified.”
The clearing was still the same with the exception of an empty hole. ‘So he left already?’ Your friends joined you near the dock and looked worse for wear. Gon seemed to sag with disappointment and Leorio looked like he had been sick. Kurapika handed you your target’s badge, he had been lucky enough to find it, and you all approached the doc. You saw the needle man was back in his Gittarackur form and examiners were counting up points.
“Hey y/n, did you know that there are trackers in the badges?” Gon asked you, determination solidified.
“Really now?”
Maybe that's why you felt like you were being followed.
