The next week had been absolute hell. You pride yourself on your strong immune system, chalking up the illness to an overreaction to the nightmare you had been having and stress, but it was quickly becoming obvious that you had contracted some illness. The most likely place that you reasoned it could come from was the dirty pill you had taken without much thought. You regretted that decision now. You had originally found yourself sleeping all day, waking only to consume meagre meals and vomit, yet every time you woke to get ill, the pink device would begin ringing in that same chiming tune. You don't know why you answered, but every time you did, his calm voice would instruct you what to do to find food or medicine and give a countdown till he returned. He somehow only called when you were awake and you found yourself checking for cameras. Of course, a tech genius such as himself wouldn't leave them out in the open and you tried not to let it bother you. Tried is the keyword there, however, and you soon found yourself unable to sleep. Paranoia and sickness don't mix well and insomnia were beginning to make you manic.
Every noise was too loud, the lights were too bright even though they had been turned off, and the buzzing of electricity through the vents was too constant. Your skin was too tight and you could feel every shift your bones made, grating against the muscle around them. It angered you. The final straw was the ringing of the phone with the alert he would return tomorrow and the advice to get some sleep.
“You look exhausted, I’ll check out your cuts when I get back but please get some rest.”
A subtle confirmation that he could see you. It threw you into a frenzy, tossing shelves, tearing at the walls, destroying everything you could hold, and searching for the stupid cameras that you knew were here. The phone buzzed quietly behind you, barely heard over the noise of your destruction. You channelled all of your nen into your fists and slammed them into the walls, only hearing a thunk as the extra reinforced walls barely moved. You screamed and pounded away at the wall till your hands were bloody and your adrenalin had left your body. You finally clicked the device, a confused reprimanding voice escaping the other line.
“What are you doing? I made that room just to your liking! Why won't you just calm down?”
He made it sound as if this was just a small tantrum and it aggravated you.
“Let me out! Open the stupid door or I swear to god my friends will kick your ass!”
He went quiet at your demand then the quiet sounds of typing were audible. A recording began to play and you listened confusedly.
“Come on! Mabey greed island will lead to my dad somehow! I just know that he left a clue for me.”
The soft voices sounded calm and almost brought tears to your eyes. They were okay. That small victory didn't last long however as you continued to listen to the conversation.
“Alright, Gon. I don't have anything else I need to do. Are you ready to win the auction?” Killua asked.
‘What about me?’
“Nope! I'm ready when you are.”
Did they forget about you already? No. It was impossible. They were your friends.
“Mannn. Studying is exhausting.” Came Leorio’s voice.
What did he mean? You were missing! They had to be looking for you.
“I would like to apply for the position of bodyguard,” stated Kurapika’s voice.
There was a click and the recordings stopped.
“They’re not looking for you. I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this but they don't care about you. I do though. I have always cared about you. I’m the only one you need. Understand?”
‘The recordings had to have been doctored,’ you reasoned.
Yet even with that excuse, you couldn't help the shivers that rocked your body. He laughed softly.
“I love you, darling.” He spoke, sighing softly as if floating on a cloud.
You dropped the phone to the ground, not bothering to hang up, and grabbed some pillows from the bed. You walked slowly through the carnage of your jail into the one place you felt like you weren't watched, the restroom. You layered the bath with pillows and blankets, locked the door, and lay in the makeshift bed.“What are you doing?”
You sat up, once again finding yourself under the weeping willow. You were on an island of sorts, mostly covered in grass except for the sandy beaches. It was small, maybe a mile in diameter with the willow being the only tree in sight. You wiped your eyes, clearing your cloudy vision, and looked up at the hanging hammock. Kai peeked his head over the fabric, blue eyes shining vividly in the light.
“The you that I know would never give up that easy,” he said, smiling softly.
“I’m not giving up! I just need a plan.” You paused and looked at him.
“I’m sorry. I should've listened to you and now all you are is a passing dream!”
He sighed and invited you to sit with him.
“You couldn't have done anything stupid. He was too strong for either of us. I've been trying to talk to you for years but you wanted to forget I guess.” He glanced away.
“I don't blame you for it though. I would've tried to forget about something like that too and now I’m only able to talk to you in your dreams.” He looked to you, sorrow filling his very veins.
“I won't leave you, idiot. I missed you.” He hugged you, burying his face in your neck.
“You need a plan? Get close to him.”
You pulled back and gave him a confused look.
“Why would I ever be near that freak!?”
He leaned in close and kissed your cheek.
“He’s insane, I know. But we can use that. If he actually thinks he loves you, then pretend to love him back. Get close to him and make him trust you. Then you attack!”
You faltered.
“I don't want to be a murderer,” you murmured, barely above a whisper.
“You have to! You need to do it, for me! Plus, you know that if you just run away, he will always find you. You need to kill him.”
His voice was monotone and demanding, a simple order that placed the weight of the world on your back.
“I’ll do it,” you responded eventually.
His face lit up and he pulled you into his chest.
“I knew you would! I’m so proud of you. Don't let me down.”
The quiet sound of knocking echoed over the little island.
“I guess it's time for you to wake up. Don't forget about me alright?”
You began panicking, the world around you slowly dissolving.
“I don't want to leave!”
Your protest was all for naught however as you felt yourself begin to fall.
