"Check" Sophie said, grinning up at Keefe, who was sitting across from her, brows furrowing. Then, his eyes lit up and moved his rook.

"Checkmate." He says, smirking.

"What?!" Sophie looked down at the board, and, yup, she was in checkmate! She looked up at Keefe, who was of course doing his signature smirk that she had a love/hate relationship with. It was very attractive. But whenever he did it, it always meant she had to feel embarrassed.

"I hate you." She mumbled as she slid her mallowmelt across the metal porch table they were sitting on. She felt really embarrassed that she asked to get chess from the Forbidden Cities to the Lost Cities and she couldn't get a win against Keefe! She loved chess when she was younger, and so far she had managed to beat Fitz, Biana, Dex, Linh, Grady, and Edaline. But she just couldn't beat Keefe. She slouched in defeat as Keefe took the mallowmelt and put it all in his mouth at once. He looked at her and she looked away, crossing her arms.

"Hey, don't be a sore loser! I bet you'll beat me..soon. Probably." She gave him a look that said

"Okay, okay. I'm sorry!" Keefe said and got up and grabbed her arm.

"Whatever." She mumbled, still feeling defeated.

"You don't have to be sad, not everyone can beat the Keefester!" He said as he pulled her up, their faces almost touching. Sophie shoved him away and turned around, going back into her room. Keefe followed her in and looked at her through the door that lead to the balcony.

"Okay. I'm sorry." He said, softer. Like he meant it. He took her arms and pulled her up from where she was sitting on her bed. Then, he did something really unexpected. He kissed her. And she kissed him back.

"I'm actually sorry for beating you at your own game." He said between kisses. Sophie tried to say its okay but she couldn't. She just kept kissing him to see if he's understand.

"I know." He said. Wow. He understood. He was that amazing.
