My fingers grazed over my pathfinder as I picked it up and held it up to the light. It had been a long six hours of work, and I was ready to go home to Sophie. My eyes adjusted to the view of our home as I quickly opened the door. I couldn't wait to get into bed and have the best sleep of my life. But right as the door opened the door, Sophie came running up to me.
"Keefe!" Sophie squealed. She's wearing one of my sweatshirts and shorts. Why is she so giddy all of a sudden?
"Hi, love." I brushed a piece of hair from her face. She suddenly started intensely staring at the floor.
"Sorry." She mumbled. Why is she sorry? I looked into the foyer a little more and noticed a empty bottle of wine on the kitchen island.
Oh.
"You're drunk" I say. Just to make sure she's okay, I cup her face with my hands, lifting it up. She looks pale. Not good.
"No I'm not." Sophie said, words slurred.
"Sure you aren't. Cmon, lets go get you some water. That sounds good, right?" I gave her a cheery smile. Sophie grabbed my hands around her face and brought them to my chest. Her touch gave me the biggest butterflies.
"No." She said. "I just want to stay here." She rested her forehead on my chest. I sighed. I. Will. Not. Give. In.
"We can do that after, okay? For now let's just make sure you feel fine." I try to lead Sophie towards the kitchen, but I end up walking forward without Sophie, who hasn't moved at all.
"I don't wanna go." Sophie said. I could tell she was trying to be serious, but the only thing she was being was drunk. And cute. But that's besides the point. I chuckle at her as I approach her. Sophie leans into me, probably trying to kiss me. I take the opportunity and pick her up. She feels so nice in my arms. I want to protect her from everything. Why was she drinking? I want to protect her from that. I want to hold her in my arms and protect her from all of the burdens she's carrying.
I walk upstairs to our room and set Sophie down on the ground.
"I don't wanna sleeppp!" Sophie whines. "Unless you come to bed with me, Hunkyhair." She winks at the last sentence. If she was going to play that way, I would too. My finger wraps around a piece of her hair.
"Maybe in a few, kay?" I smile. My hand that was wrapped around her hair wanders to her waist.
"You go first. I'll join you in a bit." I wink back at her. Hopefully that will get her in bed, I think as I exit the room. I walk down the stairs and into the kitchen. I grab a glass and fill it with water. My eyes graze the room and find the empty wine bottle on the island. My worries fill my head.
Why was she drinking?
Is it stress?
Is it people?
Is it herself?
Is it me?
I attempt to shove that last thought out of my head. If I dwell on it too much, the guilt might overtake me. I end up walking back up the stairs with some hangover medicine for the next morning and a glass of water.
"Finally! It's been, like, forever since you left. I was starting to miss you!" Sophie says as I walk into the room. Thankfully, she's in bed.
"It's been five minutes, hon." I say, sitting down. Hopefully this whole flirty thing is going to work. I slip my arm over her back and lowered her onto the bed a little bit. I leaned down, about to kiss her smirking lips, but then held the glass of water up to her lips. I gave her an apologetic look. I really did feel sorry, but she wasn't going to take the water willingly. At least that's what I learned from the last time she was drunk. Once she finished, she glared at me.
"Seriously?" She said, sitting up. She grabbed the collar of my top and pulled me into her. Our faces were mere inches apart.
"Let's make a deal." I say.
"Hmm?" Sophie responds. She's staring at my lips.
"If you sleep now, I'll give you the most memorable kiss tomorrow morning." I say, grinning. There was no way drunk Sophie would be able to say no.
"Wait." She paused. "How do I know you're not just doing this so I go to bed?" She asks me.
"I have no desire of the sort." I say honestly.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
"Okay." Sophie says, smiling. We both climb into bed. Sophie snuggles up real close to me, and although her aroma smells like alcohol, I don't mind at all. Just as I'm about to fall asleep, though, Sophie starts tracing her finger over my chest. I hold back a smile and try to sleep. Sophie's hand moves to my jaw. My eyes open slightly. I smirk at her.
"You like what you feel, Foster?" I ask her. I know I should probably shut up and let her sleep, but I can't help talking to her beautiful face. Sophie flushes at my words.
"Maybe." She says. I laugh. We stare at each other for a little while.
"I can't resist you." Sophie breathes.
"There are some mutual feelings going on, love." Sophie looks confused.
"Love." She says. "Love." She says again, a bit more certain this time. "Love. I like that."
"It's fitting." I say. "Y'know, cause I love you."
"I love you too." We both fell asleep.

I woke up before Sophie the next morning. I got up and walked over to our bathroom. My brain was just processing what had happened last night. I laughed. Sophie was going to be so embarrassed. I walk over to the closet and put on an outfit for work. As I entered the bedroom again, I saw Sophie quickly hide under her covers.
"What happened, love?" I'm on the verge of laughter. I walk over to the bed and pull the covers off.
"You finally sick of looking at my lips or what" I'm smiling now.
"I was drunk." Sophie says. She tries to grab the covers again, but they're too far for her reach. I sit down in front of her.
"What are you doing?" She asks.
"Wow, Foster. You forgot about our deal? Or maybe those memories haven't resurfaced yet." A few seconds pass as Sophie attempts to recall.
"The deal's off." She finally says, crossing her arms. She tried to grab the duvet again, but I grabbed her hand in time.
"A deal's a deal, love. And as I recall, I'm supposed to give you the most memorable kiss you've ever received."
